Crushing on Lorna Potgieter- On 26 Aug 2015
Where were you in 1984? For us, this was the year Lorna Potgieter was crowned Miss South Africa. Since then Lorna has actively been involved in the pageant in one way or another. Most recently Lorna accompanied Bokang Montjane to Miss Universe in Brazil, as well as Marilyn Ramos to Miss Universe in Russia.

1. What is your favourite line from a movie?
It's so hard to choose just ONE favorite line from a movie.
"Life is like a box of chocolates... You never know what you gonna get" from Forrest Gump is one I love... And simply "DITTO" from the movie Ghost is one I use often

2. Which colour dominates in your wardrobe?
Simple Black dominates my wardrobe but I love to add my individuality by accessorizing with bright interesting accessories and scarves... I also have a total passion for fabulous shoes and bags and sunglasses.

3. What is your favourite song?
I have so many favourite songs because I LOVE music and it depends on my mood... Today I am choosing ' MY WAY' by Frank Sinatra

4. What is the last book you read?
As a DOG LOVER I have just read 'The art of racing in the rain' by Garth Stein .. Which is a book about mans life's struggles as seen from the perspective of a dog... Lots of smiles and tears.
I have this past weekend just read the book 'Misdemeanours' written by my 'Facebook friend' Sally-ann Fawcett... It is a book about Beauty Queen Scandals... Mostly Former Miss World scandals

5. What are you currently busy with?
I love life and love being busy but since turning 50 I am spending more time with loved ones and Travelling than I did when I was a younger workaholic chasing my career and dreams for so many years. I am still involved in organizing women's events and doing the 'Image Talks' I so enjoy... And I am now planning on bringing back the very popular Model/Pageant/Beauty Workshops for young ladies which I did successfully for so many years... It's my Passion!

In 1985, Stelzer was Miss South Africa and slated to be a delegate to the Miss Universe pageant, but due to anti-apartheid demonstrations withdrew from the competition. In 1989, she was Germany's representative to the Miss Universe 1989. She finished in the Top 10 of Miss Universe. She was first runner-up of the Miss RSA 1982 and 1984 contests. South Africa | 18 August 2005 Cindy Mathys
Former beauty queen Jacqueline de la Cruz and Springbok rugby agent Jason Smith have been struggling to have children for years so they can't help calling the tiny baby girl wrapped in a striped, pink blanket "little princess".
De la Cruz and Smith have been waiting for nearly a decade for their firstborn.
And late on Tuesday afternoon when they saw her for the first time, there were tears of joy.
They named the baby Sophia, after actress Sophia Loren.
"People always tell me I have Sophia's cheekbones and mouth, and we named her after the icon."
"Her second name, Sterling, means excellence and this is the name we will be calling her," said the daughter of former politician Danny de la Cruz.
The Smiths, who live in Constantia, said their story was one of hope for other couples.
"We tried everything from in vitro fertilisation treatments, to artificial insemination, and even Chinese herbs.
"My sister was willing to be surrogate mother, but just before we went ahead, Jason said we should try one last thing," said De la Cruz.
After reading about reproduction medicine specialist Dr Thinus Kruger at Vincent Pallotti hospital in a national magazine, they set up a meeting with him, hoping he could help.
"As soon as we met Kruger he made me feel confident that we would have our own baby naturally," said Smith.
When Smith saw his daughter for the first time he said the feeling was indescribable. "She is a little miracle."
With her long legs and pouting lips, Sophia, who weighed just over 2.5kg at birth, may just steam up the cameras when she is older.
She has already received a bouquet of flowers from the Golden Lions and Griquas Rugby clubs.
The ecstatic parents advised couples struggling to have a child to never give up.
"There is always another option and people should remain hopeful," Smith said.

Wilma van der Bijl: life with breast cancer
Wilma van der Bijl, still as gorgeous as when she was crowned Miss South Africa in 1987, is now reaching out to other women who also have cancer.
After her own battle against breast cancer Wilma van der Bijl, still as gorgeous as when she was crowned Miss South Africa in 1987, is now reaching out to other women who have cancer.
Wilma lived through some of her darkest moments when cancer was diagnosed in June 2005. Shortly thereafter she underwent a double mastectomy.
She's outspoken about what she has been through and is keen that other women have regular breast examinations and do everything they can to stay healthy.
Although her cancer was picked up while still in the early stages she was shocked when she was diagnosed.

"I didn't fit the profile at all," she says. "I was 42 at the time and in good health - I don't smoke, I'm not overweight and cancer doesn't run in my family so I had no reason to suspect I might be at risk. But just before diagnosis I was tired all the time and no matter how much I slept it was never enough.

At the same time my right breast didn't feel 100 per cent. I think subconsciously we're aware of what's going on in our bodies and breast cancer served as my wake-up call."

But a mastectomy followed by a bout of chemotherapy is bound to knock any woman's strength and it's hardly surprising that after her treatment Wilma's strength of character was tested to the limit.

"I suffered really bad depression and severe complications from the chemotherapy," she recalls. "But my children were six and seven at the time and even though I felt absolutely sick and spent I knew I had to find the resolve to live for them and my husband."

Even then it took all the strength she could muster when doctors found she had ductal carcinoma. "Losing a breast couldn't compare with the alternative of death. I'm more than just a breast.

"I know it might sound peculiar and many people won't relate to this but I'm glad for the warning. I take much better care of myself now and make sure I live every day to the full. Whenever I can I encourage other women to get checked on an annual basis. The inconvenience of a mammogram is nothing compared with the drama and anguish of a mastectomy.

"I'm so glad my cancer was diagnosed early. If it had been any later the consequences would have been much more serious. I'm also grateful I opted for reconstructive surgery immediately after the mastectomy and would urge other women to seriously consider this option.

'This worked for me'

Wilma has several suggestions on how to best get through your cancer treatment.

"For starters you need to trust the team treating you," she says. "You're at your most vulnerable and you need all the support you can get. "I'm so grateful to the doctors and nurses who helped me. I appreciate the open and respectful way they dealt with all my questions and fears.

"On a more practical note, you really must get moving as soon as you can after a mastectomy. Wait for the physiotherapist to give you the all-clear, then do the exercises to keep your muscles from wasting away.

But don't be tempted to drive too soon - you'd be surprised how exhausting it is.

"It's also important to remember that everybody's treatment and recovery are different so you shouldn't compare yourself with other patients or you may end up feeling hopeless.

I never thought I'd bounce back but, although it takes time, you come through the experience and regain your energy and lust for life."

Wilma's tips on managing chemotherapy:
Sleep before you go in for chemo.
Take your medication at the prescribed times.
You might not feel too bad initially but be warned - it could hit you later.
Eat healthily and make sure your diet includes plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables.
Drink lots of water.
Don't plan anything for at least three days after the chemo. I always tried to have my chemotherapy on a Friday so I had the weekend to rest.
Cut your hair really short when it begins to fall out otherwise it creates a real mess.
Buy lots of stylish bandanas for your bare head so you can still make a fashion statement.
Don't go into the sun after you've had chemo as your skin will blemish easily.
Your memory takes a beating and you won't remember what happened yesterday. It's a combination of many factors and it does improve so don't worry.
Wilma's tips on managing radiation therapy:
Rest well the day before you undergo radiation and try to have it first thing in the morning so you have the rest of the day ahead of you.
Dust the area with Maizena beforehand.
It seems to make the skin less sensitive.
Wear loose shirts and no bra.
Don't have a warm bath or shower before or after sessions as this will irritate your skin.
Don't use creams or oils on the treated area. If your skin is very dry chat to your doctors about what you can use.
Any burn marks will disappear slowly but surely.
Ask the medical team to do the tattoo marker under your arm, not between your breasts where you'll see it for the rest of your life.
You'll be tired so don't plan a hectic weekend.

The Scrooby family – A smooth blend 22 October 2009- http://kormorant.co.za/17185/the-scroob ... ober-2009/
OB Scrooby says there are no more Scroobys in Scrooby – the place in Nottinghamshire in England which gave the Scrooby family its name. They have all emigrated, mostly to the United States and many can be found in Boston where the pilgrims had settled after 1620. The South African branch of the family came to this country with the British settlers in 1820.
The first Scroobys to settle in the Magalies Moot were the brothers William Walter, Albert Leopold and Octavius Benjamin. From the gravestones found in the area, it is clear that they were already settled here in the 1880s, but the first Scrooby to buy a farm was William who bought 2825 morgen of Grootplaas from the Pretorius family in 1897 and sold half of it to his brothers in the same year.
Although of British descent and English speaking, the Scroobys fought on the side of the Boers in the Anglo Boer War. OB’s grandfather, also called OB, cultivated wheat and oats on the banks of the Magalies River where Lakeland is today. He was a successful farmer and supplied the Boer forces with food and fodder from his well-stocked sheds. While he was away on commando, however, the British struck and burnt down his sheds, his house and everything on the farm. OB’s father, Eric, was a baby then and had to live with his mother under a salvaged corrugated iron sheet.
After the war, grandpa OB canabilised material from the British blockhouses on the Magaliesberg to rebuild his farm. That was the only material that was available.
When the government started expropriating land for Hartbeespoot Dam around 1916, the Scroobys, like the Schoemans, objected. They did not want to sell their land, but was prepared to sell ‘servitude of storage’. The issue ended in a court case which the government lost and the Schoemans and Scroobys retained their land, the submerged areas included.
OB was born in 1927 and remembers well growing up in the Moot. He travelled by donkey cart to school in Skeerpoort where there was a parallel medium school. OB recalls that there was strict separation, even animosity, at school between Afrikaans and English speaking children. It is one of the anomalies of the aftermath of the Anglo Boer War that some people could not forget the war and regarded all English speakers as British, while others managed to blend the English and Dutch and grew into a truly bilingual culture. In those days there were many English speakers in the Moot, many of them Settler descendants.
OB’s mother, Dolly, was Afrikaans (her maiden name was Botes) and OB says he never spoke a word of English to her or a word of Afrikaans to his father. How smoothly they managed to blend their cultures was illustrated by a photograph of Eric and Dolly taken at the Voortrekker Monument with the Groot Trek centenary celebrations in 1938.
Many changes in the topography of the area occurred over the years – some suddenly, some gradually. OB noticed one such a sudden change when as a little boy on his way to school one morning after a heavy storm, he noticed that the mountain looked different. A huge part of the rock face near what is today Leopard Lodge had broken away and slid down the mountain, leaving a deep gouge. For years it was a very noticeable feature, but now it is overgrown and not so conspicuous anymore.
A more gradual change, apart from the buildings and roads, is the vegetation. At the turn of the 19th century the Moot area was devoid of trees. Both Eric Scrooby and Johan Schoeman were fond of trees and Eric started cultivating blue gum trees. He gave some to Johan who planted them along the road from the dam wall to Schoemansville in the 1930s. Johan then started his own blue gum nursery and plantation in Meerhof. The blue gum was a popular tree for it was a fast grower and provided useful straight timber. Ground water was not an issue then.
OB met Delia in the 1950s after his first marriage ended in divorce. She was a young widow whose husband was killed in a car crash. She was doing modelling work then and OB saw her picture in a magazine. A mutual friend introduced them and Grootplaas again had an Afrikaans madam of the house in an English speaking household.
The name Scrooby has for many years now been associated with beautiful women. Delia, with her modeling, started it all and her daughters carried on the tradition. Odile was a Tukkies Rag Queen, Odette became a Miss South Africa and Olivia became a Miss Teen South Africa. All of them, including their adopted sister, Carla, and the eldest and only son, Eric, who is now living in New Zealand, got married and have children of their own.
OB, who had considerable success with drying lucerne with a machine he developed with the help of a friend in Durban, has always been fond of big cars. Somebody who owed him money for sand offered him an old car that has been standing in a shed for 20 years. It was a 1934 Packard Dietrich V12, of which, OB later learnt, only two were custom made – one for Clark Gable and one for an Arabian sheik. This one was Gable’s but no-one has any idea how it ended up in South Africa. As a gesture of appreciation of his friend’s help in developing the lucerne dryer, OB gave him the car. Today the car is back in the United States, being exhibited in the motor museum in Detroit and estimated to be worth a million dollars.
A feature of Grootplaas which has become a landmark is the railway coach parked on the shore. It is a Caboose, built in 1934 by Norman Pinker as an inspector’s coach – a complete flat on wheels. When Pinker retired in 1947 he was given the coach as a retirement gift and arranged with OB to park it next to the shore. OB says it was a mammoth operation to get it there from Damsig siding where it was delivered by rail.
OB and Delia are taking things easy now. He had a heart attack last year, but has recovered and is otherwise in good health. They travel when they feel like it and if they don’t, there are always the children and the grandchildren to delight and spoil them

Former Miss SA recovers after hippo attackSOUTH AFRICA / 25 December 2003, 09:06am- http://www.iol.co.za/news/south-africa/ ... ack-119874
Image
Doctors on Wednesday were treating former Miss South Africa Diana Tilden-Davis for an infection, following a hippopotamus attack in the Botswana Delta earlier this month.
Tilden-Davis, who won the pageant in 1991, was attacked last Thursday while paddling in the remote northern reaches of the Delta, where she and her husband, Chris Kruger, run a safari company.
Kruger said in a statement on Wednesday: "On December 17 Diana was poling a mekorro (dugout canoe) in one of the narrow channels in the Okavango Delta, Botswana.
"Diana came around a corner and surprised a hippo that was in the channel. The hippo attacked the canoe and Diana was bitten in the lower leg just above the ankle."
She was air-lifted to Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg.
"Doctors managed to set the shinbone properly and are presently fighting the infection caused by the bite," said Kruger.
"There is a severe drought in Botswana at the moment and all the grazing animals, including hippo, are quite stressed because of the lack of grazing grass.
"This factor together with the fact that the waters are normally low this time of the year, giving the hippo less chance to move away from human activity into deeper waters, could be one of the reasons why this hippo was so aggressive."
Kruger said: "Di is doing fine. She is very positive and enthusiastic and I think seeing her daughter yesterday for the first time since the attack made her very happy. We are all just hoping for the best."
Tilden-Davis was also second runner up in the Miss World contest of the same year and her career includes roles in the horror film Howling IV and the action adventure movie Captive Rage.
According to writer Doreen Levin, who traced the history of the beauty pageant, she hails from a long line of beauty queens with her grandmother Thelma Fairlie winner of a Marlene Dietrich lookalike national contest organised by the now defunct Sunday Express. Her older sister Janine has also won the Miss South Africa competition, and her sister Leanne was a finalist.
Meanwhile, instead of a quiet Christmas in the bush, the family will spend the day at Tilden-Davis' bedside.
"She's still in intensive care, so we're just going to relax with her," Chris said.
This is the second hippopotamus attack in Botswana in December. Earlier this month a Cape Town woman, Janice Simpson, was killed by a hippopotamus while on her honeymoon in the Okavango Delta.
Kruger National Park spokesperson Raymond Travers said: "Hippos are very dangerous. More people are killed by hippos than any of the other big five in Africa. They come out of the water at night to go into the bush for food and 90 percent of the attacks take place as they are walking into their feeding grounds.
"People must be very careful and if they're in a park they must stay in their car as a human can't outrun a hippo." - Sapa

Culture : Beauty and the Beast of Apartheid in S. Africa : Amid the bathing-suit and talent contests, there is also bias. A black woman can win and yet lose the crown.- http://articles.latimes.com/1992-01-28/ ... -s-entrant
January 28, 1992|SCOTT KRAFT | TIMES STAFF WRITER
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — The lights were dimmed, the audience held its breath and the master of ceremonies ripped open the envelope. On a card inside was the name of the new People's Miss Johannesburg--"Nani Mokoena!"
A crown was placed on the tall black model's head and photographers snapped pictures of her holding the keys to the Opel Kadette she had won. It was the happiest moment in 20-year-old Nani Mokoena's life.
But by the next day, her warm glow was gone. Pageant officials said there had been a misunderstanding. It seemed that the sponsors were happy to let black women compete for the crown, but they wanted a white woman to wear it.
The pageant was restaged two weeks later, and the judges knew just what to do. A blue-eyed blonde Afrikaner, Mokoena's runner-up the first time, got the crown, the car, the modeling contract and the free trip to Portugal.
That was 1990, but the memory was still fresh when Nani Mokoena and many other black women considered whether to enter the country's most prestigious pageant, Miss South Africa of 1991.
"Many of us thought about taking a chance," Mokoena said, "but why enter and then be made to feel ashamed of yourself?"
In a country with five times as many blacks as whites, only 50 of the 500 Miss South Africa 1991 contestants were black. And although the pageant has been open to all races since it began in 1954, there's never been a black winner.
As Mokoena expected, no blacks were even among the 12 finalists. The panel of nine judges (one of whom was black) chose a tall, blonde 22-year-old actress, Diana Tilden-Davis, as the new Miss South Africa.
The pageant generated only a murmur of disapproval among blacks when Tilden-Davis was crowned in August. But her appearance and third-place finish in the Miss World pageant last month, (South Africa previously had been ostracized from the international stage since 1977) has touched off an ugly debate here over beauty, racism and the legacy of apartheid.
Beauty contests are the latest front in the battle between whites and blacks for future control of South Africa.
Whites had enthusiastically applauded the invitation from the Miss World organizers, who turned away South Africa's entrant in London 14 years ago. Interest in South Africa was so high that the pageant finale in Atlanta last month was broadcast live nationwide here, at 4 a.m. South African time, and rerun that evening for viewers who missed it.
Top government officials, all of whom are white, said Miss South Africa's re-entry into world competition was yet another sign that their promises of reform were ending this country's long isolation. And Tilden-Davis even paused for tips from Foreign Minister Roelof F. (Pik) Botha, in a meeting recorded in full color in the local newspapers, before leaving for the United States.
But many blacks weren't so pleased to see the doors swinging open.
"All of a sudden, whites are feeling that absolutely everything is kosher," said Nokwanda Sithole, editor of the black-oriented Tribute Magazine. "They're comfortable that Diana Tilden-Davis is in the Miss World competition, even though she is absolutely not representative of this country."
While most blacks have welcomed President Frederik W. de Klerk's sweeping reform of segregation laws in South Africa and willingness to share power with blacks, they remain an oppressed majority, denied the vote and subjected to widespread poverty and homelessness.
"How we wish we could share in the joy of Miss South Africa," the black daily Sowetan newspaper, the country's largest, said in an editorial. "Sadly, her good performance (in the Miss World pageant) leaves many black South Africans cold."
The African National Congress, the country's largest black opposition group, had given its grudging OK to the Miss World invitation. But the ANC's women's league dissented, saying that the beauty industry "degrades and exploits women" and that "in our view the current white Miss South Africa does not represent the majority of our women."
"South Africa is very, very anxious to prove to the world that all is well here, but it is not true," said Baleka Kgotsitsele, of the ANC Women's League. "There are many things that are still the same, and these beauty pageants are proof of it."
But it was Tilden-Davis herself who ignited the controversy. During a trip by Miss World contestants to South Africa, Miss Nigeria innocently asked the South African queen why more blacks didn't compete for Miss South Africa.
According to Miss Nigeria, Tilden-Davis, whose sister won the crown in 1988, said it was because most black girls become pregnant by the time they are 15. (Miss South Africa contest rules stipulate that only unmarried, childless women under 24 may compete.)
After some weeks of silence, Tilden-Davis denied the remark. She admitted, however, that she had discussed the lack of black contestants in Miss South Africa with Miss Nigeria.

Monica Borges Pereira began her modelling career at the age of 15, it was not long after that she entered her first Beauty Pageant and won.
Monica’s career began to blossom when she entered the Miss South Africa Pageant in 1992 and became the first ‘Portuguese girl’ to be a finalist. It was during this time that South Africa underwent significant political changes, which led to a first in South African history – the first ‘black’ Miss South Africa – Amy Kleinhans.
In the same year, Monica entered and won the Miss Portugal South Africa. Winning the title meant traveling to Portugal where she represented the Portuguese community of South Africa in the Miss Portugal Universe Pageant.
In 1993 Monica was crowned Miss Portugal Universe and in 1994 went on to represent Portugal at the Miss Universe and Miss Europe. Amy Kleinhans-Curd qualified as a teacher shortly before holding the coveted title of “Miss South Africa” in 1992. My personal Interests include Running, Swimming, Painting and Reading, yachting, Charity work and Child development.
As the first ‘non-white’ Miss South Africa pre-democracy, I was able to represent SA in the ‘Miss World’ competition after the lift of sanctions. As a representative for South African rights, I refused to carry the old South African flag which represented the Apartheid government and, as such, was recognised by Nelson Mandela for her commitment to democracy and the rights of South Africans. As an Ambassador for South Africa, I have remained an active participant in celebrity events, in hosting international visitors. My involvement remains focused primarily around South Africa’s ability to sustain and develop its’ youth. I am actively involved in several businesses which focus on providing a platform for skills development and SMME support programmes
As a 23-year-old mixed-race woman, she competed for the first time in 1991 and placed second. She competed the following year and defeated 11 other contestants for the title of Miss South Africa 1992, the first time ever a non-white was crowned in the history of Miss South Africa.
Her first runner-up was also non-white, black woman Augustine Masilela of Soweto, who would be a Top 10 semifinalist at Miss Universe 1995.
Kleinhans would crown her successor a year later, Palesa Jacqui Mofokeng, who would be the first black Miss South Africa ever and second non-white to capture the crown.
In 2014, she was guest judge in the final Miss South Africa 2014 beauty pageant, venue in the Sun City Superbowl, Rustenburg, South Africa. Transmitted by television network DStv.

Miss World 1992
As the official representative of her country to the 1992 Miss World pageant held in Sun City, South Africa on 12 December, she became Miss World Africa and 4th runner-up to eventual winner Julia Kourotchkina of Russia.
During the pageant participants paraded with the flag of their country. Amy refused to walk with the flag of then apartheid South Africa. She chose instead to walk with a white flag, symbolising peace. After the event she received a phone call from Nelson Mandela thanking her for making that decision.[3]
The dress she wore while participating in the pageant, a white and gold Stefania Morland design with elaborate ostrich feather details, is on exhibition at the CP Nel Museum in Oudtshoorn.
Personal life
Amy Kleinhans is now the mother of 4 children.

01: Peggy-Sue Khumalo (Gauteng) (Miss Photogenic) - Miss South Africa 1996 and Top 10 Miss World 1996
02: Babalwa Mneno (Eastern Cape)
Image
Babalwa "Barbz" Mneno-Mandel (née Mneno) is a South African model, events manager, hair salon boss and reality television personality who first rose to fame as the first runner-up in the 1996 Miss South Africa pageant, which was won by Peggy-Sue Khumalo.
Well known for her beauty pageant titles, Babalwa has modeled for SA Fashion Week, CPT Fashion Week and for a myriad of fashion shows from Nigeria, London, and Moscow to New Mexico. She is the former CEO of the Sundowns Chikitas.
Babalwa was one of the eight celebrities who danced in the SABC2 reality competition Strictly Come Dancing 2, in 2006. She and her professional dance partner Thabo Moloto were the first to be voted out.
She was a celebrity housemate on the seventh season of the DStv reality television series Big Brother Africa, in 2012.
In 2013 she featured in the docu-reality television series Reality Check, on e.tv.

Big Brother Africa Profile
Babalwa entered Big Brother StarGame because she loves competing in challenges, both physical and intellectual. The model, events manager and hair salon boss from King William's Town in the Eastern Cape says the fact that she will be pushed to the limit in the house excites her and that she loves winning – "losing ain't for me!" she says.
Barbz says that she won't sell her morals short for money – viewers shouldn't expect any hanky panky from her in the house, but she's game for anything else.
She loves samp & beans with oxtail and her favourite books are "Nice Girls Don't Get Rich" and "The Secret". She enjoys most reality TV – she's a huge Big Brother fan – and also likes watching news channels like CNN and Al Jazeerah.
She says her favourite places in the world outside of her home country are Miami and Lagos – the former for the parties, nice people and great shopping and the latter for the "fun".
Barbz is inspired by a lot of people, but picks her Mom as the most influential because she moulded her into the person she is today. She says her parents influenced her life most because they made sure she went to good schools and their strict nature kept her out of trouble.

Kerishnie Naicker is a South African beauty pageant titleholder crowned Miss South Africa 1997 and placed 4th Runner-up at Miss World 1998. Kerishnie Naicker grew up in Reservoir Hills, Durban with her parents Amra and Joey, a self-employed businessman and two siblings. She attained an honours degree in pharmacy in 1995 and practiced as a senior pharmacist in hospital and retail pharmacy. During her final year, her father died from a heart attack. She was studying towards her masters in pharmacy practice researching "The Social and Behavioural Factors Affecting Tuberculosis in South Africa" in 1997, when she became Miss South Africa.
Kerishnie Naicker was crowned as Miss South Africa 1997. By entering the election, she intended to bring public attention to the large Indian population who is an important part of the South African population and to raise awareness on tuberculosis. Upon winning the competition, she became the first Indian elected Miss South Africa. She became the eventual winner of the title, gaining the right to represent South Africa in Miss Universe 1998 and Miss World 1998.
Kerishnie Naicker, a former Miss South Africa, was caught driving at 190km/h on a KwaZulu-Natal highway in her official car, sporting an expired licence, in 1999. She tried to get off the hook by saying she was rushing to see a sick uncle in hospital, as well as—also rumoured—boasting of her close relationship with former president Nelson Mandela. She was fined R10 000 for speeding. Perhaps a case of more beauty than brains?

Heather Hamilton, a 22-year-old investment consultant from Hillcrest in KwaZulu Natal, walked away with the Miss South Africa 1999 crown after she dazzled the crowd at the Sun City Superbowl on Saturday.
Her pleasant disposition, poise and broad smile were just some of the traits that convinced the judges she was the fairest of the 26 contestants.
On Sunday, the first day of her reign, she was still grappling with her achievement. In between her hectic schedule, she found time to pour her heart out about winning the title.
"I couldn't believe it and still have to pinch myself every now and then to make sure this is for real," she told The Star.
"I must admit that at the beginning of the evening I was a bit nervous, but after hearing people scream for me, it sort of eased my nerves and I felt more relaxed."
Hamilton is no dumb blonde, and is proof that brains and beauty are a winning combination for any aspirant beauty queen.
"I am looking forward to the year ahead and am thankful for being given the opportunity to represent my country. I would like to make a difference in at least one person's life - nothing would make me more happy," she said.

Hamilton said that during her reign she would like to tackle the issues of unemployment, job creation, family planning, and the preservation of the environment and wildlife.
The Western Cape's Nadia Wyngaard was crowned first princess and Gauteng's Pulane Moraladi was the second princess.

Kim Danoher (Miss Port Elizabeth 1999) - http://www.heraldlive.co.za/news/2012/0 ... the-years/
GLOBE-TROTTIONG Kim Danoher, now a qualified yoga instructor, has fond memories of her year in 1999.
“There are an enormous number of memorable moments and many friends I still have from that time – working with kids and charities, motivational talks to schools, hosting radio shows, judging countless competitions, really seeing and understanding how much goodwill and generosity is present in the Port Elizabeth community,” she said.
“A most precious moment was a small project I organised where three schools took part to make and deliver handmade cards to old age home residents for Valentine’s Day. I kept a few cards and when I read them and remember the kids singing and how meaningful it was for the home residents, it easily brings tears.”
She said Port Elizabeth was small enough for “everyone to recognise you from being in The Herald”.
“It opened doors to gaining valuable experience and meeting a wide range of people. You become a brand for that year.
“The fact that my diary was still fully booked with charity and promotional events four months after my reign ended makes me think that I continued to have something worth contributing.
“Being approachable was important, and that often meant proactively going out of your way to break the ice and show that you were nothing more than a normal person, just like everyone else.
Since 1999, then, Danoher has lived in London for four years, travelled extensively, returned to South Africa – and her home city for two years and now is living in Dubai where she is studying acrobatic yoga teaching.

The Star, Malaysia[Monday, April 14, 2003 10:30]
KUCHING - South African Charlene Gerber, who wants to wipe out poverty in the world if given the power, has been crowned Miss Tourism Intercontinental 2003.
The 20-year-old university student from Pretoria beat 30 other finalists to win the title at the Crowne Plaza Riverside Hotel on Saturday.
Ukrainian Alina Selaznyova, 22, a part-time model, was first runner-up while Australian model Jessica Catherine Milton, 21, took third place.
Gerber, who looked stunning in her national costume, said the contest was a learning experience.
Asked what would be the one thing in the world she would like to change if given the power, she said poverty.
“Poverty is the root cause of so many problems. Eliminating poverty will have a domino effect, and it can make a difference to the world.”
Her response was greeted with applause from the audience of some 800 during the question-and-answer session for the 10 finalists.
Gerber won US$5,000 (RM19,000), Selaznyova US$2,000 (RM7,600) and Milton US$1,000 (RM3,800).

Inspiring – an apt but modest description of Suhina Singh, the Indian beauty queen whose accomplishments at the tender age of 26 years defy the proverb that ‘beauty is only skin deep’.
From sashaying down the catwalks in Milan to wielding her stethoscope in the trauma unit at a local Uitenhage hospital, it is the confidence and innate wisdom exuded from the young phenomenon that will pique your interest.
But it wasn’t always like that admits the formerly shy and quiet medical doctor and professional model. “I always dreamt of being a model but didn’t have the nerve.” Her older sister, Nivedna, a dental surgeon, played a pivotal role in launching Suhina’s modelling career when she arranged an interview with a modelling agency during her first year as a medical student. It was the same sister who also completed the entry forms for the Miss South Africa Pageant in 2001 where Suhina was a finalist at 19 years of age. “Being a Miss South Africa finalist was a life-changing experience. I was forced to speak to people which I found hard initially and I did things I never thought possible.” Ultimately it gave her the confidence to pursue her dreams. Her guiding belief is that you can learn something from everyone that crosses your path and every situation that you find yourself in. She acknowledges that the frustration born out of a lack of resources in the stressful and often violent environment of the local Uitenhage hospital where she is currently completing her community service is an exercise in character building. “Working in the trauma unit has taught me to grow up and be responsible.”

Durban - The distraught mother of a model who was killed in a car accident says her daughter's career was just coming into bloom before disaster struck her down.
Thabisile Madlala was killed instantly when her Uno collided with a minibus taxi on the M4 freeway in Durban.
"Thabisile was due to leave in October for London where she had a modelling contract waiting," said Nellie Madlala, speaking through her tears from her Ridgepark home. She said her daughter went to work in Durban a year ago. She landed a job as an accounts executive with a PR company.
"She had just started a new job, three months ago. She got her driver's licence in March and then bought a new car in April. Her ambition was to become a psychologist," she said.
"She was so full of promise. On Monday night, she phoned me and told me she wanted to buy me an expensive lounge suite and have the house painted. My husband was assassinated in 1992 in Bulwer and my son died last year.
Won many competitions
"She told me she wanted to do this for me because I had looked after all of them when her father died and she couldn't forget that. Then, the next day she's gone. What a blow," she said.
"Although I'm so traumatised, I've got to accept that I can't change anything now."
She said Thabisile was the fifth of her six children. Thabisile was born in Bulwer and did her primary schooling there and in Kokstad. She was at Sukuma Comprehensive School in Imbali until matric.
"Her modelling career started when she was in primary school."
Thabisile went on to win many beauty competitions and last year was a finalist in the Miss SA competition, where she won the prestigious awards of Miss Personality and Miss Photogenic.
Lisa-Jane Owen of Models International Agency said Thabisile was a vivacious model with lots of potential.
"She was doing well and could only have got better," said Owen.
"She was a great model to have. It's unbelievable. It's very sad that she died. It's a great loss," she said.

3rd time lucky at Miss World
2002-11-29 17:52- http://www.news24.com/World/3rd-time-lu ... d-20021129
Johannesburg - Although Miss South Africa's first princess was initially considered too old to take part in next month's Miss World 2002 contest, she has been given the green light to compete, Sun International said on Friday.
The hotel group's Sue Clerck said they had confirmed with Miss World organisers in London that Claire Sabbagha (25) could compete in the pageant.
"She can participate. We just spoke to the... organisers in London and they said as long as she was 24 when she qualified for the national pageant (Miss SA 2001) she could participate," she said.
There was speculation earlier in the day that Sabbagha would not be able to take part because she was too old.
The rules on the entry form state participants may not be younger than 17 or older than 24 on December 31 of the year of the contest.
Clerck explained that the pageant did not work according to a calendar year and, as long as Sabbagha was not 25 during the Miss SA pageant, she could take part in Miss World.
There has been much confusion regarding the December 7 pageant, with South Africa sending two contestants.
Sun International announced on Thursday that Sabbagha would represent the country.
However, Miss Junior Africa 2002 Karen Lourens, had already been sent to the contest by beauty-competition organisers Pageants SA.

Ethical problems
Sun International originally announced it would not send Miss SA Vanessa Carreira to the pageant in Nigeria because of logistical problems.
Later, Carreira said she would not have taken part, anyway, on ethical grounds because she objected to the death-by-stoning sentence imposed on a Nigerian woman for bearing a child out of wedlock.
Carreira's presence was required at the 2002 Miss SA pageant at Sun City on December 8 and, according to a media release by Sun International, she had decided the local commitment was more important than taking part in London.
When riots in Nigeria caused the pageant to be moved to London, Pageants SA struck a deal with Julia Morley, organiser of Miss World, for Lourens to represent South Africa.

Miss SA contender No 2 ousted
Morley accepted Lourens as the SA contestant and she left for London on Wednesday.
On Thursday, Sun International announced that first princess Sabbagha would take part in the contest.
Miss World organisers ruled on Thursday afternoon that Lourens (19) would no longer take part.
According to Beeld newspaper, the pageant's organisers had to accept Sabbagha as the South African representative because of her contract with the hotel group.
Efforts on Friday to reach Morley in London for comment on the age issue, were unsuccessful.

SA sends two Miss World competitors- http://www.santabanta.com/newsmaker/591 ... mpetitors/
South Africa has sent two contestants to the Miss World contest by accident.
The mix-up happened after the winner of the Miss South Africa title was forced to pull out for contractual reasons.
Pageant owner Sun International then said it wouldn't be sending a candidate and so another company sent one instead. Now Sun has sent one too.
Miss South Africa Vanessa Carreira should have represented her country but Sun International canceled he because she had other obligations on December 7.
Sun International then said South Africa would not field a candidate.
Then state radio reported the 2002 winner of the Miss Junior Africa title, Karen Lourens, would represent South Africa in the contest courtesy of a company called Pageants SA which said it had been contacted by the organisers to send a participant.
But on Thursday Sun International said Claire Sabbagha, who finished runner-up to Carreira in the Miss South Africa contest, was its official candidate.
"We have nothing to do with the other girl," Sun International spokeswoman Sue Clerck told the South African Press Association.
Carol Balwin, a director of Pageants SA, said she was discussing the matter with her lawyers.

From winning the 2002 Miss South Africa pageant and being 2nd runner up as Miss Universe a year later, to being a co-host on a number of local magazine and lifestyle television shows, Cindy Nell is once again living her super-charged life to the full as Co-owner of her and her husband’s beauty business – Cosmetix – which she juggles deftly with being Mum to their two kids and many MC and speaking arrangements.

Surprise winner 2002-12-08 23:52- http://www.news24.com/Entertainment/Sou ... r-20021208
Sun City - Cindy Nell, a 21-year-old student and entrepreneur from Pretoria, was crowned the new Miss South Africa at the Sun City Superbowl on Sunday night.
Nell, who owns her own promotions company and is studying tourism management, was something of a surprise winner, taking the crown ahead of spunky Bridget Masinga (21), a model from KwaZulu-Natal who was second runner-up, and striking Lee-Ann Liebenberg, a 19-year-old model from Roodepoort.
This year's pageant kicked off with a lacklustre performance from Idols finalists Melanie Lowe, Nicole Billingham, Bianca le Grange and R&B sensation Lira.
The Idols connection did not end with the Miss South Africa contest largely based on the popular M-Net music reality show. The two shows even had the same presenter, Sam Sabiti.
The Idols format was further hammered home by an over-zealous "rent-a-crowd" which provided a noisy, if not distracting backdrop, in an obvious attempt by organisers to inject life into the show. Disappointingly, many Superbowl seats were vacant.
The 12 finalists were introduced in streetwear, while the swimsuit section had many ogling. At that point Masinga, Liebenberg and the eventual first runner-up Tammy-Anne Fortuin, a 20-year-old model and student from Cape Town, had established themselves as firm favourites with the crowd.
A number of South Africa's top designers, including Craig Native and Gideon, provided the inspiration for the haute couture. Native, who reportedly became embroiled in a spat with the organisers over his designs, drew the loudest applause when introduced to the crowd.
In a break from previous pageants the organisers elected to inform the contestants one by one whether they had made it through to the top five.
With the 12 whittled down to five, each of the contestants was asked the same question: if they could travel back in time what event in history would they change?
Both princesses replied that they would change nothing because events took place for a reason, while Nell opted to have stopped apartheid.
Nell, who lists the Brooklyn Mall in Pretoria as her favourite place, said at the post-pageant briefing she supported her predecessor, Vanessa Carreira's stance in refusing to attend the Miss World pageant in Nigeria because of the death sentence imposed on a Nigerian woman who had a child out of wedlock.
Nell added that her primary aspiration was to help uplift rural communities. She refused to discuss her private life saying that she had promised exclusivity to a popular tabloid magazine.
Despite the disappointing opening music number, popular Kwaito star Mandoza had the audience baying for more as he sang his latest hit "Tornado."
The Miss Personality and Miss Legs titles went to Zenobia Badroodien and Karolina Skrzypczak and respectively.

TOP 5
Karolina Skrzypczak (Karolina Sky Rafalski) (Miss Legs)
Image
Karolina, with a sexy name like that she should already be worthy of a place on the 100 list! She is the second Polish South African to make the list and she doesnt fail to impress! Some of you may recall her as Karolina Skrzypczak, the former face or should I say legs of Veet, quite worthy legs if I must say so myself. You can still catch her gracing your TV screens for another hair removal product advert but this time for global giants Bic Razors where she stars along side Sharks and Springboks front rower the Beast.

‘Impossible is Nothing’– entrepreneur- http://www.destinyconnect.com/2013/06/1 ... 013-06-14/
“It’s never easy starting a business, so patience really is a virtue. Stand up for yourself and push, no matter what people are telling you, and never give up,” says Peggy Mahlaba (34), founder and CEO of Meta Cosmetics and
Peggy M fragrance
.
For Pretoria-born Mahlaba, a former Miss SA finalist-turned-entrepreneur and the author of the inspirational Impossible is Nothing!, securing the R1,5 million capital required to establish Meta Cosmetics – a natural make-up range for darker skin tones – and Peggy M, her signature fragrance, was relatively easy.
She invested savings accrued from her engineering firm, Imbokotho – a fully female-empowered company founded six years ago with multi-million-rand projects in Tanzania and Benin. What wasn’t so easy was persuading big retail companies to buy her products.
“It’s a highly competitive market, escalated by the fact that retailers are nervous to take a chance on locally manufactured brands,” she says.
The only local retailer to come to the party so far has been Edcon. Inspired by the “scents of the French countryside”, the Peggy M fragrance for him and her goes on shelves at five Edgars and Red Square stores in Johannesburg, Pretoria and Cape Town this month.
Mahlaba’s also up against steep targets, needing to generate distribution costs around the region of 60%, but she’s optimistic that her successes as an engineer and writer will carry her through.
Her interest in the beauty industry began at a young age, but she put it on the back burner in favour of a career in electrical engineering. It wasn’t until a holiday to Brazil and India that she started investigating the ingredients in cosmetics and skincare products – and was shocked to discover how many chemicals these included.
“I wanted to develop a product range for black women using only natural, non-chemical ingredients and, most importantly, one manufactured locally with which South Africans can identify,” she says.
However, as the cosmetics side of the business hasn’t developed as quickly
as her fragrance venture, Mahlaba’s turned her attention to promoting Peggy M not just on our shores, but across the globe. She’s already established a sales office in New York and Sephora, a French distributor, has expressed interest in distributing the fragrances.

From Biltong Queen to Miss SA 2002-12-09 22:39 Marietie Louw- http://www.news24.com/Entertainment/Cel ... A-20021209
Since her childhood days, the new Miss South Africa, Cindy Nell, wanted to wear the coveted crown.
The string of pageant titles behind her name - from Miss Biltong Festival to Miss Pretoria - shows how she made her childhood dream come true.
The Nell family, who moved from Polokwane to Pretoria about a year ago, apparently boasts a number of beauties.
Nell's 19-year old brother, Chris, will leave the country within the next few days after securing an international modelling contract.
"Cindy has a passion for people," Dia van Staden, convenor of the Miss Limpopo (formerly Miss Pietersburg) pageant, said on Monday.
Nell was the first princess in the Miss Pietersburg competition in 2000.
"Cindy has long since set her sights on becoming Miss South Africa and her dream has been realised," Van Staden said.
As first princess, Nell often stood in for Vanessa Schulze, who tried to bring the Miss South Africa crown to Polokwane in 2000. "Cindy often stood in as Miss Pietersburg. She has a passion for charity work," Van Staden said.
In 1998, Nell was crowned as second princess in the Miss Junior South Africa pageant. The same year, she won the title as Miss Biltong Festival in Mokopane (Potgietersrus).
In 2000, she also wore the Miss Inter-continental crown. She was also a finalist in the Miss Legs competition this year.
Nell is studying marketing and has her own public relations company.

Twice as much glamour- What's On - Gauteng | 25 November 2003 - http://www.iol.co.za/tonight/what-s-on/ ... our-916101
The glamorous build-up to Miss South Africa was almost tainted by this month's revelations concerning a finalist who was axed for unscrupulous behaviour.
Nomalanga Mtetwa's withdrawal - following an expose by The Star's Thuli Nhlapo - was announced earlier by Frontline Productions, producers of the show, who confirmed her matriculation certifications were "insufficient" and thus made her ineligible to participate.
Mtwetwa was further accused of running a fraudulent travel and recruitment agency which promised jobs in London. She was replaced for the pageant by Nokuzola Mkwanazi.
Drama and sensationalism are, however, integral ingredients of beauty pageants - and ours is no exception. But the actual show promises to be an extravaganza as SA's top beauty pageants combine for the first time.
December 13 is the date for the two-hour pageant which will air live on SABC1 at 6pm. Channel boss, Romeo Khumalo, said: "SABC1 is ideally positioned as the platform for youthful expression, and our vision is to showcase SA's best talent."
Frontline Productions plans to bring the Sun City Superbowl to life with a music spectacular featuring TK, Sifiso Sudan and Bafana, featuring Phinda Ntya on vocals, Black by Nature, and Danny K.
Contemporary classics from Stoned Cherrie, Werner Dey, Cameroon, Gideon, Norman Callan and Gavin Rajah will be worn by the Miss South Africa finalists.
The Miss SA Teen finalists have, meanwhile, had evening wear designed for them by Aubrey Ramatla, Marc & Michael, Francois Ved'emme and Thomas Thomson. Youthful designs for that part of the pageant have also been sponsored by Stoned Cherrie, Cameroon, Loxion Kulca, Diesel and JBS, with jewellery pieces by AngloGold.
"The Miss South Africa pageant is a sumptuous event of which we are very proud," says Phillip Georgas, divisional director of resorts at Sun International. "This year's combined effort with Miss Teen brings a welcome dimension to the traditional pageant."
The winner of the Miss South Africa title will qualify to participate in the Miss World and Miss Universe pageants, in addition to receiving many fabulous prizes.
Tickets for the combined Miss SA and Miss Teen pageant are still available at Computicket from R120

Miss SA and Miss Teen crowned South Africa | 15 December 2003 Doulha Domingo -http://www.iol.co.za/news/south-africa/miss-sa-and-miss-teen-crowned-119435
Africa's kingdom of pleasure, Sun City, was once again home to the most prestigious beauty pageants - Miss South Africa and Miss South Africa Teen 2003.
This was the first time that South Africa's premier beauty pageants were combined.
The Sun City Superbowl came alive on Saturday with double the beauty, glitz, glamour and entertainment.
The stunning and graceful 24-year-old Joan Ramagosh
i, from Pretoria, realised her dream when she was crowned queen of this year's Miss South Africa 2003 pageant.
And Masechaba Dlengezele, 18, from Johannesburg, with her spunky, vibey and refreshing innocence, was a clear favourite when she was crowned the queen of this year's Miss South Africa Teen 2003.
Miss South Africa's first princess was Marisa Eggli from Cape Town and the second runner-up was Siza Majola from Limpopo.
Miss South Africa Teen 2003's first princess was Pearl Thusi from Durban and the second princess was Soula Bouzianis from Johannesburg.
Bear in mind that the first princesses play an important role, because if for any reason Miss South Africa or Miss South Africa Teen cannot fulfil their obligations, the first princesses would have to stand in for them.
The gorgeous Joan and the bright and youthful Masechaba were crowned at a show that exceeded the wildest expectations.
The all-new Miss South Africa and Miss South Africa Teen 2003 pageants were broadcast live from the Superbowl, exclusively on SABC1.
The presenter for the evening was Hlomla Dandala of Isidingo and All You Need is Love fame; his co-hosts were Miss South Africa 2002 Cindy Nell and Miss South Africa Teen 2002 Phuti Khomo.
For the first time in the pageant's history, no Miss Congeniality was announced, but the beautiful legs competition, sponsored by Veet, added to the excitement.
The 21-year-old Charlene Gerber from Johannesburg walked away with the Miss Veet Legs title, plus a 12-month modelling contract to the value of R50 000.
This year's fashions were a complete flashback to the 80s - re-invented with much more colour and African flair.

Widow puzzled by tragic crash- Phoebe Wearne Saturday, 22 October 2011 5:03AM https://thewest.com.au/news/wa/widow-pu ... -ya-145823
The wife of a Burns Beach man who died after his BMW ploughed into a concrete wall on the Mitchell Freeway last month has revealed her sadness at losing the love of her life 10 years after her parents and brother died in a similar accident.
Marisa Drysdale, 28, still has no answers as to why her young and healthy husband veered off the road and crashed into the Erindale Road overpass on September 22.
Jared Drysdale, 33, was alone in his sedan and died at the scene.
His eldest daughter Mischa, 5, was the last person to see him alive. The father of two visited her at a Connolly pre-primary school about 10 minutes earlier.
Major crash officers are investigating whether distraction or fatigue caused his death, which is one of 143 to have occurred on WA roads this year. Police have ruled out medical factors.
Ms Drysdale suffered last week through the 10th anniversary of the deaths of her father, mother and brother in a car accident in South Africa - just three weeks after losing Jared, who she says "sparked her back to life" and helped her believe she could have a better life again.
The pair moved to Australia in 2006 with the hope of giving their children a better life and to move closer to Mr Drysdale's family.
Ms Drysdale said she was at home when her mother-in-law and other family members arrived to tell her the devastating news.
She said she was frustrated by the mystery surrounding the crash that had turned her life and future plans upside down.
"I couldn't believe I was having to hear those words again . . . it was like deja vu," Ms Drysdale said.
"I know there are so many people out there so much worse off, but I worry about our future and all the moments in our daughters' lives that he is not going to be there for.
"Because I lost my own family I never wanted them to experience anything like this.
"I am just taking each day as it comes. Some days I don't want to get out of bed in the morning, but I find strength in the girls and keep going for them."
Ms Drysdale urged people to drive carefully and be more compassionate towards the loved ones of those who had lost their lives in vehicle accidents.
She said her husband was a tender man with an infectious laugh who would have taken the shirt off his back to help someone out.
"He just had such an amazing effect on every person he met," she said. "We had everything we wanted in life and it just feels so wrong not having him here. It's not complete any more."
Major crash investigator Det-Sgt Kevin Wisbey said the most difficult part of his job was often dealing with the families of those who had died in such tragic circumstances. He said officers expected to hand their findings to the Coroner later this month.

She later got married to Bossie Pieterse in Australia (https://vimeo.com/61261362)

Dr Dhiveja Sundrum is too dynamic to spend her days in a consulting room.
This might be bad news for the patients but it's good news to anybody who has seen her on television, because . doctor or no doctor, this is where she belongs.
She's dynamic - ex head girl of Crawford College, Ambassador to Reach for a Dream, Spokesperson for the Starfish initiative "Feed Our Nation" and PR Account Executive for a cause communications company, where she's tasked with marketing social and corporate responsibility programmes.
She's brilliant - six distinctions in Matric. Bachelor of Medicine; Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) (UCT 2001 - 2007).
She's beautiful - Miss South Africa 1st princess 2004, Top World 15 and Top 2 in Africa in the Miss World Pageant 2005.
She's talented - Previous Presenter Eastern Mosaic before making it into the top 12 in the 2007 Top Billing presenter.
In her other business, she cooks for private dinner parties, drawing guests in to the kitchen to learn the secrets of Indian spices and cuisine.
Her spare time is devoted to medical volunteer services in informal settlements.
Dhiveja also plays the flute and piano and is a Ballroom and Latin American dancer! Seriously!
It goes without saying that she's also an excellent Master of Ceremonies.

Miss South Africa 2010: Bokang Montjane
Written by TVSA Team from the blog News on 13 Dec 2010
The Miss South Africa 2010 pageant took place at Sun City's Superbowl last night (Sunday, 12 December) and was won by 24-year old model and entrepeneur Bokang Montjane.
The show was broadcast live on Mzansi Magic for the first time and was hosted by former Miss Universe Michelle McLean and current Idols host ProVerb. Former Miss SA Tatum Keshwar hosted the Red Carpet in a half-hour pre-show build up ...
The ceremony itself included performances by the Bala Brothers, oddball ballet dancer dudes (yes, the stockings pun was intentional) and Reality Bromance of the Year El'Loyd*, who should forget about solo careers and start a duo/group.
While the Bala Bros and El'Loyd were current, the music in between wasn't. Every bit of soundtrack and link-up music that was played to accompany the finalists was dated, bland and irrelevent unfortunately.
As for the Top 12, they modelled in bikini's, designer-wear and ballgowns and spoke about how they plan to save the world.
Strong favourites among the audience during the show were 19-year old Natasha Kashimoto and 24-year old Dorah Mtetwa. Natasha was a Top 12 finalist in Miss SA Teen 2008 and Dorah was a Top 12 Miss SA finalist in the same year.
This year: Natasha made it into the pageant Top 5, while Dorah didn't.
Also in the Top 5 were Bianca Couthino (who won the Sandra Bullock award for Miss Congeniality), Careen Truter, Dhesha Jeram and Bokang.
The title of First Princess went to 23-year old Dhesha and 22-year old Bianca was named Second Princess.
Once they'd gotten over their shock moments of: "Damn, we can't believe we didn't win but can't show it," Bokang was named winner of the crown.
Born in Limpopo Province, Bokang now lives in Honeydew Ridge, Johannesburg and runs a modeling and confidence school in Auckland Park. She has various pageant titles under her belt but has never been a Miss South Africa finalist.
Bokang her own words:
"My favourite food is pap and morogo, pap and mopani worms. I love tripe too and shushi. A lot of carbs but I love it. I sudied Public Communications, Relations at the University of Johannesburg. I'm done, finally I graduated.
"For someone to have confidence and a high self-esteem it takes them to be extremely comfortable with who they are. Always have an attitude of: 'I'd rather stand out than blend in.'" If you make that your motive you'll never feel like you really, honestly need to fit in with anyone else. Just be yourself and love who you are."

South Africa's Frieda du Plessis was included in the Top 20 semi-finalists at the Miss Tourism World 2012 pageant in Bangkok, Thailand on Sunday 16 December. She did not make it through to the round of 5 finalists which included the delegates from China, India, Lebanon, Russia and Thailand.

The ceremony aired live on Mzansi Magic and was hosted by ProVerb - who hosted last year too - with Michelle McLean in the commentary booth and Bridget Masinga behind-the-scenes and on the red carpet ...

Also spotted on the red carpet were Khabodacious - who choreographed the dance numbers for the ceremony, judge and designer Gert Johan Coetzee (in matching blue hair and mad hatter cravat), Sonia Sedibe and Sonia Boothe, who was guilty of the biggest fashion crime. of the night:

She wore a monstronsity by David Tlale that was obviously so boiling she couldn't breathe and got Twitter trending with shoutouts of horror.

The ceremony itself included performances by Big Nuz, LeAnne and RJ Benjamin and featured the 12 finalists strutting their stuff in bikini's and designer gear.

In between the performances: Thuli Sangweni was announced as the winner of Miss Congeniality, Frieda Du Plessis won the Veet Ms Legs title and the Top 5 were announced.

Once each of the five had been asked their final questions, the three finalists were revealed and Melinda was announced as the winner. Here's what she had to say in answer to her question that asked her about her three biggest blessings:

Melinda
"I think the first thing I'd count as my blessing is my health. It enables me to do the things that I want to do in life and to have the aspirations. I'm fit, I'm young and I'm energetic and it gives me the energy to take on everything that life throws at me.
"Secondly, I think my been-throughs are one of my most greatest blessings. They made me the person I am today and made me a strong woman. They enabled me to inspire other people as well.
"The third thing that I am most grateful for is all the support that I have, my family, my friends, everyone that do not know me personally but who believe more in me than I sometimes do in myself. It makes me so grateful, thank you."

Decision to quit Miss World ‘well thought through’ – Miss SA
2012-06-29 14:41

Miss South Africa will not be competing in the 2012 Miss World pageant, with the reasons behind Melinda Bam’s exit from the pageant unknown.
1st Princess, Remona Moodley, posted the following update on her Facebook page yesterday: “Hi all my gorgeous friends:) just to let you know some super exciting news, I will be representing South Africa at Miss World 2012! Dream come true! Xx”
The reigning Miss SA took to Twitter to wish her first princess Remona Moodley good luck at the Miss World pageant, taking place in China on 18 August.
She wrote: “I look forward to my training for MissU & to see Remona realizing her dream as well!”
She also said: “As MissSA I made this decision with due consideration. Pls trust m judgment, it is a well thought through decision maximizing opportunities!(sic)”
Melinda will still be competing in the Miss Universe pageant, due to take place in December.
TVSA reported that Miss SA pageant organisers Sun International have not disclosed the reasons for Melinda’s withdrawal from the competition, simply saying: “It is very personal and we as the licence holders respect her privacy.”

Miss South Africa 2012-13
Image

1. Marilyn Ramos - Miss South Africa 2012-13 (Unplaced at both Miss World 2013 and Miss Universe 2013)
2. Stacey Webb
3. Pearle Nxele

Top 5
Charne King
Simone de Kock

Finalists
Natasha Kashimoto
Koketso Modiba,
Dhesha Jeram,
Cindy Rosslind
Charlotte Smith,
Tarryn Kim Cornelius,
Danelle de Wet (Miss Cogniality)

And Miss South Africa 2012 is ... Marilyn Ramos
First princess was 23-year-old law student Stacey Webb from the Western Cape, and Twitter favourite Pearle Nxele was crowned second princess. The social media network's other darling Koketso Modiba from Gauteng didn't make it into the top five finalists. The Miss Congeniality prize was awarded to the Western Cape's 19-year-old Danelle De Wet.
The top five contestants – Webb, Nxele, Ramos, Charne King and Simone de Kock – were asked what was the most underrated thing in South Africa to which Ramos answered that she wouldn't be able to choose.
King's answer took everyone by surprise when she took a, perhaps, lighter approach and said that South Africa's food was the most underrated thing about the country.
