In the second part of American back to back blocker at Miss Universe, We focused on Marena Bencomo's back to back bid at Miss Universe 1997. Some netizens and forumers said that Marena's 1st Runner Up finish was just "pure luck" because heavy title contenders Verna Vasquez of Curacao and Denny Mendez of Italy were "unfairly" eliminated during the judges' question round. In your opinion why do you think Marena failed to get the back to back victory of Venezuela at Miss Universe 1997? Do you think Brook's witty answer weighted more against her "solid & sincere" answer about no rules & be outrageous final question?

She didn't fail. Being 1st RU was already a lucky placement for her because she was really dull the whole time. Bland personality per se... She just got the support of the crowd because it was held in Miami, and other than that, there was really nothing special about her.

HER FACE LOOKED SO NERVOUS AND UNSURE ALL THE TIME! SO, I GUESS SHE LACKED CONFIDENCE!

Marena lacked the spunk & energy she had during the Miss Venezuela final, that she won with conviction. At the national final, she was stunning in her mint green evening gown, and was joyous in victory.

I think she was certain there was no way she would win the Miss Universe title - MUO had not crowned a back to back, until then. To me, she appeared to be 'going through the motions', rather than give herself & Venezuela a fighting chance.

Marena was breathtakingly beautiful and she deserved to win. However the organization was not yet ready for a back to back victory.

She had obvious support from the Venezuelan judge, Carolina Herrera, during the final night. She gave Marena only 9.90 while all other contestants were getting 9.00 or lower from her.

It's not that she lacked confidence (If that was the case she wouldn't have even won Miss Venezuela), but that she was a quiet lady and got outshined by Brooke's spark.

But overall, she deserved her placement even though she was dead last in the interview round. It couldn't be denied that she was facially stunning and had that angelic beauty that was hard to ignore.
