IT WAS A COOKING SHOW THAT TIME. YES, ZULEYKA RIVERA WON THE EVENING GOWN, BUT KURARA CHIBANA WAS AUDIENCE'S FAVORITE. AS ALWAYS, TRUMP MEANT BUSINESS AND HE FAVORED ZULEYKA OVER KURARA. IT WAS A BAD DECISION THAT TIME BECAUSE JAPANESE INVENTORS ALMOST PULLED OUT THEIR INVESTMENTS ON TRUMP'S BUSINESSES BECAUSE THEY BELIEVED KURARA SHOULD WIN MISS UNIVERSE 2006. TO PLEASE THEM, TRUMP CREATED ANOTHER COOKING SHOW IN 2007 WHERE A PLAIN JANE RIYO MORI WON OVER THE GODDESSES NATALIA GUIMARAES AND LY JONAITIS.

Let's set aside politics, why do you think Kurara lost the crown to Zuleyka?

WITH REGARDS TO PERFORMANCE, KURARA DID NOT LOST TO ZULEYKA. IT'S TRUMP'S POLITICS AND BUSINESS THAT MADE HER LOST THE OPPORTUNITY.

Zuleyka basically destroyed her in every single category including question and answer you guys need to recover already is been more the 13 years and you guys are STILL a SALT mine.

Zuleyka still successful and appears in television and film to this day meanwhile Kurara is irrelevant.

I think they both shone well that night, but the judges chose Zuleyka because of her performance at the competition. However, what happened after that night is why I think fans have not been really into Zuleyka.

´・ω・` Kurara was a clear favorite to be Miss Universe in 2006 ´・ω・`
BUT the Jury decided that Zuleyka won (she is pretty too)
Perhaps the wonderful evening gown was decisive for the Puerto Rican girl to win.

IN 2007. I'M AFRAID. IT WAS HONEY LEE ROBBED OF THE CROWN.
HONEY WAS A CROWD FAVORITE THAT TIME.

IT WOULD BE GREAT IF KURARA WON IN 2006 AND THEN HONEY LEE THE NEXT YEAR.
ASIAN TO ASIAN WIN IN MISS UNIVERSE ITS A ANOTHER MILESTONE.
JUST LIKE BLACK TO BLACK INCIDENT ON 1998 AND 1999

I totally agree with you. I think kurara deserved to win than zuleyka. In 2007, korea, brazil, or venezuela was the rightful winner.

WELL, WE SHOULD NOT FORGET THAT TRUMP ERA STANDARD ARE DIFFERENT FROM IMG STANDARD.

IMG IS LOOKING FOR A SPOKEPERSON, SO IF A GIRL IS RANKED 1ST IN EVENING GOWN AND SWIMSUIT BUT SHE LOST IN Q&A PORTIONS, SHE LOST THE CROWN.

DURING TRUMP ERA INSTEAD JUDGES WERE LOOKING FOR THE SO-CALLED TOTAL PACKAGE: CATWALK, BODY, BRAIN, ELOQUENCE, STAGE PRESENCE, ATTITUDE, PROJECTION. IN FACT ALSO IF YOUR ANSWER WAS NOT THE BEST BUT IN ANY CASE GREAT, THE GIRL COULD HAVE WON THE CROWN.

IN ADDITION TO THIS, WE CAN'T FORGET THAT DURING THE 00s ALSO BEAUTY STANDARD WAS TOTALLY DIFFERENT FOR THE ENTIRE WORLD. IS THE ERA OF GLAMOUR AND FIERCENESS.

AND ZULEYKA WAS THE STAR OF THE NIGHT. EVERYTIME SHE WAS ON STAGE EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE DISAPPEARED, THE EYES WERE ONLY FOR ZULEYKA. YES, KURARA WAS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL (BUT ALSO WITH IMG THE MOST BEAUTIFUL GIRL DIDN'T WIN), BUT ZULEYKA WAS THE STAR, SHE HAD ALL THE ELEMENTS THAT DURING THAT TIME THE BEAUTY STANDARDS WANTED IT.

AND ALSO BEAUTY STANDARDS DURING TRUMP ERA WERE NOT THE SAME DURING THE YEARS:
1996 - 2000: PERSONALITY AND INTELLIGENCE
2001 - 2009: THE TOTAL PACKAGE WITH FOCUS ON FIERCE
2010 - 2014: REGAL AURA AND ELEGANCE

IF IMG STANDARDS WERE THE STANDARDS DURING THAT TIME, PROBABLY THE WINNERS COULD HAVE BEEN DIFFERENT (EXAMPLE KURARA IN 2007 AND JANINE IN 2012) BUT IS THE MARKET AND THE PERCEPTION OF THE BEAUTY OF THE MOMENT THAT DECIDES THE WINNER, AND ZULEYKA REFLECTS MORE THE IDEA OF THE BEAUTY DURING THAT TIME

In the Fierce Trump era, Kurara wasnt top notch in her SS and EG presentations. Her catwalk, twirling and timing were jerky and rough at best - very amateur. Compare that to the well-trained Latinas.

She was absolutely outstanding during her answers and charmed the ass out of everyone. Zuleyka's Q&A was not memorable at the slightest. But that night, the judges voted in favour of the pasarela.

How dare you call Riyo plain jane. She obviously was on fire that night. Sure Natalia, Ly and Honey were goddesses but they lack in the q&a portion. I will defend against all y'all!

Gurl no need to do a thread for Taliana. Her case was really obvious. She bombed her q&a performance so much that MUO would have really had a
hard time defending if she won that year.

14 years went by and I'm still waiting to see an Asian candidate with such charm and beauty. Kurara is the reason why I got into beauty pageants. I love her so much, she is my all-time favorite Miss Universe candidate still.

I've never loved Zuleyka's type of beauty and Kurara's evening gown performance was really weak. None of them deserved to win in my opinion, top 2 should have been Laurianne Gillieron winning and Valerie Dominguez or Kenisha Thom as first runner up.

I can digest Kurara's loss. Zuleyka was an ace performer and looked great with extensive preparation.

You should go back to your first thread where the mediocre swept the sub-contests and eventually won the crown in spite of not holding herself up with poise. Also, who can forget Marc Anthony's rigged scoring (or lack of expertise in judging beauty contests) as proof of the contest being unfair? Obviously, he was biased. I don't understand why Miss Universe picks a panel of unlikely judges but Marc's wife proved that Puerto Ricans aren't biased.

Denise only had an attractive face. Period!

Zuleyka performed better technically. Kurara was the crowd and audience favorite, but that doesn't count for a win.

It's telling that the two members who replied negatively about Kurara have Puerto Rican flags. Talk about clear bias. :">

As for Zuleyka being supposedly relevant, where? In local Puerto Rican tabloids and in the Despacito music video? She's just another irrelevant beauty queen unknown to the public like all the others except Vanessa Williams and Priyanka Chopra. If some local jobs are a qualifier for relevance, Kurara just appeared in Vogue Japan, which is a bigger accomplishment.

Most of Kurara's bashers are indeed Puerto Ricans. It's not about Kurara vs. Zuleyka but every other Puerto Rican beauty queen. I must say though that not all Puerto Rican fantards are as biased as Nina who expected delegates like Gabriela Berrios to place. There are also some Puerto Ricans who don't hype there delegates and may indeed conclude that some Puerto Rican victories were questionable.

Kurara's performance wasn't strong in the strict pageant sense so Zuleyka's performance was better evidently. But most of Kurara's supporters during her Miss Universe stint were non-Japanese because of her performance in the final night. Had Maria Celeste Arraras not overscored Zuleyka, Kurara would have won because the scores were very close meaning the other judges voted for Kurara. Watch the finale moment on YouTube, the audience was cheering for Kurara, not Japan, and they were not Japanese. Also, Kurara is a recognizable public figure in Japan where beauty pageants and ex-beauty queens are irrelevant so that speaks a lot about her achievement. She's famous in Japan. She's also a UN Goodwill Ambassador among other things. She may not be known internationally but of course, she's more relevant than Zuleyka no doubt.

In hindsight, I can see why Zuleyka won even though I'm still somehow heartbroken for Kurara because she was so genuine and sweet compared to that machine standing next to her.
It's the insane plastic surgery and the aura that didn't make it right for me to see Zuleyka win. Never got the hype to begin with, she's a bottom tier winner to me.
It was a different era, Trump had different criteria and I guess Zuleyka fit those criteria. She went and built a career out of it, so I'm happy for her.

I think Kurara gave a better evening gown presentation, it was the best. I don't understand why people don't talk about it. The other girls weren't as charming as her. But Zuleyka's gown was better. I don't think she looked as good in it as she did in her swimsuit because her hair, etc. made her look too thin and scrawny. The gown however, accentuated her bottom perfectly.

Kurara wasn't too bad in the swimsuit portion too and her beauty and body were highlighted.

Following the Top 5, obviously, Kurara was a better delegate who had the crowd at her feet. In the end, everyone was cheering for her and there was no visible Japanese court as far as the video goes. Although, she thanked a few overseas Okinawans for cheering for her on her return to Japan.

Kurara's presentation in the Miss Universe pageant is one of a kind. No one has been able to replicate the power of her charisma since then.

Today, she forms the upper class elite circles of Japan who frequently interacts with Hollywood personalities and world leaders so it's laughable that PR supporters are saying that Zuleyka is doing better than her. Zuleyka is still in that category. Despacito did not take off for her as they all expected. She's still not in Hollywood. She is still struggling, frankly.
