IMG to Introduce Continental Runners-up + Fan Vote in Miss U

Postby poker_man » Sat Aug 15, 2020 3:33 pm

What do you guys think about the rumors surrounding the new Miss World-like elimination process of the latest edition of Miss Universe?

According to some insiders, there will be continental runner-ups in the final five and that the fan vote will be brought back again, but this time, voting will happen after the selection of the semifinalists. The reason for this is that if in case there are travel restrictions due to serious reasons and that the current Miss Universe cannot be present, the girls from the other continents will be the proxy for the Miss Universe in that region.

By the way, this already happened when Miss Universe 2005 Natalie Glebova wasn't able to travel to Thailand and Cynthia Olavarria (Miss Universe 1st runner-up) went to crown the new Puteri Indonesia instead.

Image
Cynthia Olavarria in Puteri Indonesia 2006.

This means that by the time the final five are chosen, there will be one from each continental group (Asia, Europe, Americas and Africa) + the fan vote, where one lucky girl with the craziest online supporters will advance to the final five during the competition.

Image
Miss Universe 2016 Top 6 wherein each continental region coincidentally was represented.

The said change in format will allow each region to be equally represented in the final five plus the fan voting will allow the fans to participate online. However, the final tabulation of who wins will still be voted upon by the final judges (the fan voting does not affect the selection of winner).

To me, the pros and cons of this format are as follows:

PROS
1. Equal representation from regions (obviously)
2. Huge ratings especially for pageant-crazed counties

CONS
1. Same countries will place (which is what is happening currently)
2. Regions will the highest calibre of crown-worthy girls will suffer
3. Unpopular countries (that don't have pageant crazy fans) but have candidates with huge potential will most likely get snubbed again in this format as always

Your thoughts?

Might as well...

Also, I do find the critique that the same countries place bugs me because in reality most of those countries always place because they put in the work.

South Africa, even if I don't like Zozi, puts in the work. Same with Philippines, Colombia, Puerto Rico (since Denise came), Thailand ect have sent complete delegates for years now.

I agree with The Duchess. I don't believe that the sole popularity of the Miss universe brand in a particular country is an automatic ticket to the semi final. I believe they put the work done where other countries did not. Miss Universe is not dumb to just put one country in the semifinal because the brand is so popular but rather the org still weigh down how impactful the girls are. Yes you may beautiful and fierce but f you dont have the personality the org is looking for, then you will end up clapping.
my name is bad but i am good

Miss Universe only and nothing else!

So all of a sudden sash factor is no more? =;))
I'll believe that when those lazy and or bitchy Miss USA's start clapping. The placements in Miss Universe are so predicable that they try to throw people off by also giving placements to the most random girls at the same time. A smorgasbord basically.

Anyways, this continental thing is a no for me. They should focus more on making sure there are glam shots instead, since that's what set Miss Universe apart from Miss World.

public voting should stick to Miss Photogenic

the most is giving a semi final slot to the highest voted candidate

more than that, no no

No body said Sash Factor doesn't exist anymore, although under IMG is much less, but saying that countries that put the work are always placing because of sash factor is also inaccurate. Phillippines places because their girls put in the work, Colombia places when they put in the work, Thailand has sent incredibly complete candidates and Puerto Rico too.

All these proposed changes do not make any sense. If IMG wants to make a splash and promote equality at the same time, all it needs to do is ban the participation of countries that: 1. have not taken action to stop modern slavery; 2. penalize women with death by stoning for alleged adultery; 3. criminalize homosexuality. This will cause a big stir, and it will signal that MUO is serious about making a difference. The continental beauties thing is so petty, and laughable on a boring day.

But what if lets say the only representative for Asia in the Top 10 scored the lowest and was the worse of the 10, why should she be in the top 5?

I'll stick on the original format, but I'll add some things.

Top 20 (5 Each continent and the wildcard) (Opening Statement)

Top 12 + 1 lucky girl who will enter by on the spot voting! (Swimsuit & Evening Gown)

Top 6 (First Q & A)

Top 3 (Final Q & A)

Because the top five would not be "these are the top five girls in the competition." The top five would be "these are the best girls from each continent." Just like now, there isn't a top twenty, it's the top five from each group + five wildcards, they aren't all competing against each other, they're competing within their group and the winners can move on. I think it's fair when you look at it that way. And to be honest, if a girl wasn't able to qualify within her group then she probably wouldn't have been able to win anyways.

I wouldn't choose to make it this way, but if this is MUO's decision then I'm not angry about it. I think it would be a decent solution to pandemic concerns, but I personally don't see lasting appeal for the next few years.

If they want to stick to continental grouping, they have to separate Asia and Africa. Make it top 30:

North America
South America
Europe
Asia
Africa
Oceania

Then top 15.

Swimsuit.

Top 10

Evening gown

Top 5

Q & A with topic about the country representing.

Top 3

Q & A but one question.

They can't have that many groups because the groups need to be even. When combined, Africa/Asia-Pacific is about the same amount as Americas and Europe, with around 30 girls in each group. If they didn't combine, then there'd be about 10 African girls competing for five semifinalist spots and then the five remaining could all qualify as wildcards. It's just not fair when it becomes that easy to qualify even though there are about 30 Europeans and 30 from the Americas competing.

Oceania as its own group would be even worse. That'd essentially be an entire category for Australia, New Zealand, and Guam, there wouldn't even be enough girls in it to get five semifinalists each year. Africa/Asia-Pacific as a combined category makes total sense unless more African/Asian countries compete.

If there's anything IMG should actually do, they should restore the scores for transparency, along the honorifics of the candidates, while using their names in announcements. Plus, they should let a woman host solely like in 2001 (e.g. the supermodels Naomi Campbell and Elle Macpherson), but this time, they should include other models like Ashley Graham and commentators like Ross Matthews (judge in Miss Teen USA 2004 and host in Miss America 2019). Also, I do believe that they should make a stronger stance against women's violence and oppression of women.

On the case of awards, they should restore Miss Photogenic, although I understand why some people consider the award as problematic. IMG should do better. It already has a good criteria (which prevents disgusting or racist candidates winning Miss Universe, even if they place), but they need to restore wonderful things in order to make the pageant look more legit, such as the scores. I would rather see the scores for all the final rounds (except the final question round, which they now call the ''final word'' which is just weird 8-} 8-} 8-} 8-} ) instead of this continental thing. Plus, they should make Miss Universe travel in 10-20 countries, not just little to 5.
No more bashers in 2022, please.

Also, watch Dani Walker's video to know more on how bashers can kill with their words.
