Pura Villanueva on the right as Miss Philippines (Queen of the Orient) 1908, the first Miss Philippines title holder from the Manila Carnival OrganizationRabiya Mateo as Miss Universe Philippines 2020, the first Miss Universe Philippines titleholder from the Miss Universe Philippines OrganizationIloilo, although not a powerhouse when it comes to pageants in the Philippines, has made history not only for Rabiya's win as first Miss Universe Philippines 2020 but also for Pura Villanueva's win as Miss Philippines (formerly Queen of the Orient) in 1908. A history of first queens has put Iloilo at the forefront of Philippine pageantry.
I do feel the parallels between Rabiya and Pura. Both are intelligent, well-spoken, and of course beautiful. Both exuded a sense of leadership as well.
As weird as it may sound since older beauty pageants seemed shallow compared to today, but Iloilo's Pura Villanueva is the country's first "beauty and brains" Miss Philippines. She was ahead of her time and really used her platform as Miss Philippines to advocate for the cause that was dearest to her, Women's Rights. She became a well-known suffragette and really helped in achieving women's' rights in the Philippines during the early 1900s. But initially, Pura wasn't the favorite to win. It was actually Albay's Leonarda Limjap who was favored by the judges to win but even before she was officially crowned on the coronation day, she declined the title due to a need to "spending time with family in Japan" for some reason. Therefore, on the coronation day in Luneta Park, Pura was the one who was crowned as the first Queen of the Orient titleholder (later renamed Miss Philippines when the organizers dropped the Queen of the Occident title for Americans).
Fast forward to the first Miss Universe Philippines 2020, Iloilo made another history by winning the first-ever Miss Universe Philippines pageant through Rabiya Mateo. Just like Pura, Rabiya was not the favorite to win until they landed in Baguio where the coronation was held. A newbie in the pageant world, Rabiya was often overlooked during the early half of the contest, but she wowed everyone during Preliminaries and especially on the finals night. And there she was, the new Miss Universe Philippines title was crowned on her head.
Centuries may have passed, but it takes from one astounding Ilongga to another impressive Ilongga to make Iloilo part of Philippine pageant history forever.

Imagine our queens of today having a documentary about them like this one 100 years later.
