She Could Have Been | PH 1st RU Beauties of Big 5 Pageants

Postby oneandonly » Thu May 18, 2017 12:46 pm

Gone are the days when Filipinos were very anxious for the crowning of a Filipina in an international pageant. In this day and age, Philippines have already cemented its status as one of the most successful countries in pageant history having been won several titles and secured multiple placements in a certain year. This could have been the result of extensive preparations and the undeniably strong support system from Pinoys who are the avid supporters of beauty pageants.

For now, let's take a quick throwback on Philippines' first (1st) runner-up beauties in Big 5 pageants. This thread also serves as a simple reminiscence on our lovely Pinay beauty queens who have shown their distinctions, enormous potential and gave the eventual winners a run for their money. A recall for the 'She could have won!' moments of Pinoys from different parts of the world.

2009 - Sandra Inez Seifert

This multilingual babe is definitely a stunner. She had big shoes to fill during her stint wherein our very own Karla Henry won a year before. She did a fantastic job during the entire course of the pageant. Sandra knows what she's doing. She's into it. Her brilliant commentaries on the photos of 'Water Pollution' being shown on the screen blew the pageant aficionados away. She's taking it seriously. She also took home Best in Swimsuit and Best in Long Gown awards. However, she fell short and settled for a runner-up position. Well, as they say, that's life. She'll be remembered as one of the best delegates that the Philippines has ever sent in an international arena.

2012 - Stephany Dianne Stefanowitz

ImageImageImageImage

Image

ImageImageImageImage

She was one of the Top ten (10) semifinalists of Miss Philippines - Earth 2010 beauty pageant. She proved that there's always room for improvement. Two (2) years later, she came in a competitive form, more polished catwalk skills and the likes. No wonder she won the top spot and gave her the right to represent the Philippines in Miss Earth 2012. Filipinos have high hopes for her but as the pageant progresses, she has been receiving a lot of criticisms with regard to her body form prior to the finals night. "What happened Steph?", "Go to gym ASAP!" These are just some of the few comments of pageant fans after seeing her in swimsuit for the pageant's press presentation. Little by little they have seen some improvements. She has this witty personality and known for having this 'strong conviction' while responding to the question. These attributes didn't help her enough to capture the crown.

** Any of them could have been the Philippines' second (2nd) Miss Earth titleholder and 2nd multiracial Filipina queen after Karla Henry.
** It could have been the first ever back-to-back victory of the country in Big 5 pageants and duplicated Venezuela's Miss Universe triumph in the same year.

It is somehow strange to know that NO Pinay beauty queens have ever gone on placing in a first (1st) runner-up position. The second to the highest placement (other than the title itself) that the country has achieved is second (2nd) runner-up. Fortunately, two Filipinas namely, Evelyn Camus (1971) and Yolanda Dominguez (1972) have luckily placed for this position. Philippines has earned the record of twenty-four (24) placements and five (5) titles making it as second (2nd) on the leaderboard with the most number of wins.

1999 - Miriam Redito Quiambao

ImageImageImageImage

Image

ImageImageImageImage

Elegant. The only word you can think of when you see her during her participation in Miss Universe 1999. With her long torso and distinct Asian feature, Miriam wouldn't go unnoticed. That's just what happened. The way she walks and strikes a pose. Bam! She nailed it. But Miriam is not Miriam without her Uh oh! moment. Her remarkable fall during the preliminary competition was once talk of the town. During the interview round, she even associated this unwanted thing to the question being asked by Jack Wagner, "what have you stood up for recently?" She answered it with poise and calm spirit. Her response got a deafening applause from the audience and turned out to boost her self confidence. The question and answer portion has been a make or break for her. Her reply to the question was quite decent but unfortunately, it didn't cause her to win the Miss Universe title that year. A beauty from Botswana won the pageant. She could have been the most gracious Binibini ever to have won the most coveted crown.

2012 - Janine Mari Raymundo Tugonon

ImageImageImageImage

Image

ImageImageImageImage

Luck was on her side during her Binibining Pilipinas 2012 stint. Though it was her second try, she was nowhere to be found in everybody's list. She managed to emerge and win the whole thing. And yes, she has received a lot of bad criticisms towards her journey to Miss Universe crown. Apparently, she's a total downgrade to Shamcey according to some critics. Along the way, she has shown some improvements when it comes to her physical aspect. She gradually proved her bashers wrong. True enough! Prior to her international pageant stint, she's definitely in her fighting form. Her skin color, prominent cheekbones and some outstanding Filipina features made her more noticeable among other candidates. With the powerful cheer from Pinoys in Las Vegas and her remarkable catwalk skills, she continued the winning streak of the Philippines in this pageant. As they say, question and answer round is her forte. She excelled in this portion. Her response to Nigel Barker's question was the most applauded that night. Many believed that she's the ONE that Pinoys have been waiting for for almost four (4) decades. Unluckily, Olivia Culpo from USA crowned as Miss Universe 2012. She may not be the eventual winner but she proved that faith in God, determination and hardwork would go a long way.

** Any of them could have been the Philippines' third (3rd) titleholder for this pageant.
** Miriam could have fully shown/signified to the rest of the women of the world (who have fallen off or on stage) that she's an inspiration in case she was crowned as Miss Universe 1999.
** Janine could have been one of the 'most bashed' and exotic Binibinis to have won the Miss Universe title.

1973 - Evangeline Pascual

ImageImageImageImage

Image

ImageImageImageImage

Evangeline earned the right to represent the Philippines in Miss World 1973 after winning Miss RP (Miss Republic of the Philippines). At the age of 18, she was easily distinguished as one of the front-runners in this pageant which was held at Royal Albert Hall, England. One of the most applauded in her batch as well. Her height played a vital role in her journey. She was just charming, elegant and graceful the whole night of the competition. She's definitely a shoo-in for the title but Marjorie Wallace from the USA got the crown. However, a certain incident happened in favor for Evangeline. Marjorie was not able to fulfill her duties as Miss World 1973. The organization reportedly offered the title for her which she politely declined. In one of her interviews, she stated: "You know, the crown was for that country. Initially, they didn't give it to the Philippines. So when Marjorie Wallace was dethroned and they were giving it to the Philippines, I thought it was stooping too low for the country if I took it because it wasn't meant for the Philippines in the first place." Pageant fanatics (especially Pinoys) raised their eyebrows upon hearing this. As they say, she wasted the chance of having the very first Miss World crown for the Philippines.

2011 - Gwendoline Gaelle Ruais

ImageImageImageImage

Image

ImageImageImageImage

Gwen is the very first recipient of Miss World Philippines title (2011) supervised by CQ Global Quest Inc.'s Cory Quirino.. She may not look like a typical Filipina but she proves that she has what it takes to be crowned as one. With her towering height, she easily stood-out from the rest along with her outgoing and charming personality. Gwen also participated in the pageant's challenge events where she truly excelled. Here are some of her accomplishments: Top Model (2nd Runner-up), Beach Fashion (Top 20) and Beauty with a Purpose (Top 5). She was even named as Asia & Oceania's Queen of Beauty. Her speech to convince the judges why she should be the next Miss World was somehow commendable. However, she failed to get the elusive crown. Right before the coronation night ends, Ivian Sarcos from Venezuela was proclaimed as the winner.

** Any of them could have been the first ever Miss World from the Philippines prior to Megan Young's victory.
** If by chance Evangeline accepted the title, as early as 2008, Philippines could have been already completed the crowns of Big 5 pageants. It could have been a back-to-back triumph for the country as well upon winning of Margarita Moran as Miss Universe 1973 months before her coronation as 1st runner-up

Image

Well, this is just a result of my restless imagination. We could have earned a total of fifteen (15) crowns from Big 5 pageants to date just in case all of our first (1st) runner-up beauties won their respective pageants. A runner-up position isn't bad at all. Aspiring beauty queens from different parts of the world have always wanted to get the top spot or even just a second best placement. It's still a recognition and an honor for the country. Investing so much of dedication, hardwork and determination in order to achieve one's dream are what truly matters. Having a great honor and privilege to represent one's nation. Inspiring more and more people throughout the journey whether in pageant itself or in real life.

Thank you guys for visiting this thread of mine.
Hope you liked it.

I thin Evangeline's statement was redacted. It missed the statement that said MW was offering the job, but not the title and the crown. Wallace is still Miss World 1973.

I don't follow Miss Earth but I watched that edition where Sandra was 1st RU. It was really painful she had to be sacrificed despite her winning form in all segments just because the outgoing queen was also a Filipina. She honestly deserved to win and that would have been an acceptable back-to-back placement
I didn't know I was looking for love until I found you, Babe!

I wasn't around during Sandra's time but it seems the general consensus amongst those who watched the pageant is that she should have won that year. As far as Stephanie goes, Tereza was hard to beat during their year as the latter performed superbly that night even though language barrier affected her Q&A performance.

But I remember watching Olivia and Janine duke it out for the Miss Universe crown during their year and even though I rooted for the USA, I was convinced at the end that Janine should have won.

I was just about to comment on that one.

Regarding Evangeline Pascual. She appeared in an interview because she knew that she was blamed for this "curse". She said that the crown was not offered to her but only the responsibility. I would do the same thing. Cant blame her.

I read somewhere that the reason why Evangeline Pascual refused the MW duties was not because of pride but because she was already under contract for a movie or something. I wonder if that or this is the real reason.

Couldn't agree with you more on that! :=p

For me, only Sandra and Miriam would have been just as good as the actual winners.

"TO BE OR NOT TO BE"

- The essence of a First Runner-Up finish -

I concur with the resounding opinion that Sandra Seifert should have won Miss Earth 2009. It was unfortunate that, in the names of (1) "delikadeza," (2) credibility, and (3) integrity of Miss Earth internationally, Madame Lorraine Schuck had to guillotine Sandra's sure chances of taking home the Miss Earth crown for the Philippines...yet again. After all, Karla Henry's win in her and our own fair Philippine Islands over Tanzania's beloved Miriam Odemba sparked much debate of such ferocious intensity; the likes of which rivaled the debate over Puerto Rico's very own Denise Quinones' supposed victory over that of the revered Greek model Evelina Papantoniou in Miss Universe 2001 during that pageant's telecast from Bayamon that year. But the lamentable wastage of Sandra in 2009 was her almost faultlessly superior quality as a candidate in almost every aspect - practically tailor-fitted for Miss Earth 2009.

The other 2009 international pageant massacre we must all recall was the Miss Universe Organization's (in my opinion) grievous error of crowning yet another Venezuelan under very suspicious circumstances. You can spare me the drama, outrage, and defensive justifications here. The meeting between Mendoza, Shugart, Fernandez, and company was just too good to miss that year. Or was it some rotting rat in the cellar back then? Simply put, the Filipino sense of modesty overcame the expediency of crowning another Filipina as Miss Earth. Otherwise, the polarization of the pageant world would have been aggravated further after the 2009 Miss Universe faux pas.

The Stephany Stefanowitz dilemma was a similar story of "delikadeza," credibility, and integrity once more. But Stephany was no Sandra Seifert; Stephany showed obvious weaknesses which became Madame Lorraine Schuck's perfect excuse. But the more compelling reason was the imperative need for Carousel Productions and Miss Earth to chart their own course of NOT crowning the host country's candidate for integrity's and credibility's sake. Let us remember that 2012 saw the crowning of Wenxia Yu as Miss World in China; Ikumi Yoshimatsu as Miss International in Japan; and, Olivia Culpo as Miss Universe in the United States of America. If these victories of the host countries' respective candidate on their home soil could neither be (I daresay) questionable nor suspicious, then what could have been? A hanging elephant whose tail got tied to a daisy at the edge of a cliff?

I'm sorry if I have neither comment nor opinion on our Runner-Up finishes at Miss International, courtesy of Misses Camus and Dominguez for 1971 and 1972, respectively. Perhaps, their respective Queen's court finishes were simply the very seeds sown so that the rest of world may witness the eventual crowning of Melanie Marquez in 1979 - the perfect close to the decade which opened with the crowning of Aurora Pijuan in 1970. Talk about an end-to-end phenomenon there.

As for Miriam Quiambao...she CLAMMED UP. In a nutshell, she clammed up. Thank you, Julie Moran and Ali Landry, for having been so on-point with that comment. But I must admit that Mpule Kwelagobe peeved me back then for having snatched the crown from our elegant Miriam's hands. In retrospect, though, it was Miriam's to lose; and she delivered on the loss. Miriam's Achilles' heel in Binibining Pilipinas 1999 reared its ugly head at the most critical moment when it counted in the 1999 Miss Universe pageant in Chaguaramas, Trinidad & Tobago. In the end, the Philippines' lone bright spot of the nineties in Miss Universe got eclipsed by the eloquence of the statuesque queen from the ebony continent. Eloquence defeated elegance.

With regard to Janine Tugonon, she simply got robbed of the crown that night. The suspicious telltale sign came courtesy of the Chi stylists' refusal to coif Janine with a bun on the pretext that there was no more time to do so during the finals telecast in December, 2012. Then again, they found the time to style the tripping Olivia with a top bun. Let us remember that the candidate favored to win during the three years immediately preceding 2012 got the exclusive use of the top bun hairstyle. On point: Albania's Marigona Dragusha in 2009; Philippines' Venus Raj in 2010; and, Angola's Leila Lopes in 2011.

I must say that the MUO never forgave the Filipino fans for having cried foul over Lopes' eventual win in 2011 at the expense of our own witty, intelligent, and naturally-beautiful Shamcey Supsup. Precisely why Janine got a taste of our own medicine when Nigel Barker confronted her with that question. I would have bet that, regardless of the judge's name Janine drew or picked from the bowl, she would still have been asked that same nasty question which was meant to be a double-edged sword. And as the saying goes, "The sword cuts both ways." Sadly, Janine's chances were the ones cut because it was the year of pageant infamy. To modify Eminem's lyrics: WILL THE HOST COUNTRY GIRL PLEASE STAND UP?

Evangeline Pascual was and is one of our very few homegrown towering glamazons in international pageantry. She would have been a perfect Filipina foil against any present day Venezuelan or Colombian candidate, in the same vein when Dominique Devereaux always foiled Alexis Colby, and vice-versa, in Dynasty back in the eighties. Her eventual First Runner-Up finish could be attributed to one or both of two reasons. First, Evangeline consistently recounted that American actor Gregory Peck, as judge, voted for his compatriot and the eventually dethroned winner, Marjorie Wallace, to break the tie in favor of the latter. I love my own, as they say. (Or something along that line.)

But the second reason is equally, if not more, compelling for me. The Morleys were not prepared to crown a Filipina. Racial prejudice or discrimination? Most probably. Eric and Julia did not want to crown a newly crowned Miss Universe's compatriot such that Miss World would appear to follow the Miss Universe pageant's moves. We must remember that, in 1972, the first simultaneous win for any country in international pageantry happened for Australia. Miss Universe crowned Kerry Anne Wells, while Miss World chose Belinda Green; both ladies from down under. In 1973, Miss Universe crowned the most photogenic and dusky Margarita Moran from the Philippines. Alas! Miss World saw an undeniably towering but graceful, gracious, and well-spoken Goliath of a Filipina in Evangeline Pascual. Had Evangeline indeed been crowned, Miss World would have appeared to have simply followed the Miss Universe selection process. And that they did not want to happen for it looked too suspicious rather than coincidental.

That Evangeline never became Miss World after Wallace's dethronement will always be trivial. Whether it was Evangeline's own decision to decline the title and its responsibilities, or the responsibilities sans the title; whether it was First Lady Imelda Marcos' dictum upon Evangeline to decline the assumption offer; or, whether it was Miss World's decision to withhold the title from Evangeline, only history knows the answer. For me, this event seems to still be shrouded in mystery. Although I must admit that the first two reasons (among others involving the apartheid issue) seem more plausible since the blue crown eluded the Philippines for decades until Megan Young won it for us in 2013.

Gwendoline Ruais' proclamation as First Princess in Miss World 2011 could have been attributable to any or all of these reasons. First, Ivian Sarcos from Amazonas, Venezuela already had it in the bag right from the start - beautiful, unstoppable, charming, feminine, and compassionate. Second, the Evangeline Pascual issue of the past decades. Third, the Julia Morley-Stella Araneta animosity or Miss World-Miss International incongruence/incompatibility. Fourth, the French and English don't mix. (Remember, Ruais is half-French while Morley is English.) Fifth, racial discrimination against Filipinos. Sixth, tacky styling and gown. (Apologies to Oliver Tolentino over this opinion.) Whatever the reason was or reasons were, your guess is as good as mine. But I give Gwendoline credit for giving them all a great fight. She gave the other contenders a run for their money and demanded Miss World's respect and attention for the Philippines from that point onward.
