Missology Tolerance Group

Postby QueenChelsea » Fri Aug 07, 2009 5:22 am

I believe it's time that we actually did something about the racism on this forum.
In my time on this forum I've had many good experiences, but one thing I'm disgusted to see is racism. The one thing that inspired me to post this thread was one member saying:
"(Miss Zambia's) hair ain't made for the crown."

Are you serious? That's just one example that should not be tolerated. There's freedom of speech, but there are also certain words/phrases you don't say. They are referred to as "fighting words". I'm not saying that people can't favor who they want or voice their opinion, but what have we become? I believe the things certain people say overshadow those on here who are experts and truly knowledgeable about pageants.

I'm going to continue in the morning, feel free to respond. Perhaps anyone else has ideas about how we can promote tolerance in our forum?

It's great that you point that out :=p . I know where your coming from. I have observed that racist comments do exist in some threads...if you try to point that out to them they verbally attack you :%(( . It's great to have an opinion but it's not great using them to step on people. [-X !

(NOT SOUTH AFRICA, SHE IS MIXED-- WELL... SO DOES ZAMBIA).. Hope Ethiopia change that dress.. and be more confident in the preliminaries..

gurl, Toma does not meant any racism here. I read his post at the "Zambia sizzles." He said that the crown will not fit because of her curly hair and NOT BECAUSE SHE IS BLACK!!!! FRANKLY SPEAKING, HER HAIR IS WEIRD... you know.... THE CROWN WILL NOT ACTUALLY FIT IN! Come on girl don't be pathetic and sensitive! accept the truth and be cool! =O/ =O/ =O/ >:<

I saw the comment too, and don't think there was a racist intent behind it. I think he simply meant the crown would be difficult to place on that hair type (although it could have been put better).

"hAir aint made for the crown"

With all respect, i didnt have any negative intention with my comment, seriously. Actually, in real life, im dreaming to have that kind of hair style cuz i find it Unique and command attention [till the end of my life, i'll never have it]. with that hair style ...it would be hard to put the crown on a head sporting that kind of hair style

What is the connection between hair and racism? FYI, such hair is not only owned by Blacks, even some Whites and Asians own it naturally. Yes, there are some offensive comment, but this one is definitely not. Just don't dig a statement too much, every single statement can give thousand meanings, positive or negative, depending on how you see it. Since the poster claims it is not meant for racism, I guess no need to be on fire. Yes, racism is disgusting, but accusing someone innocent is embarassing.

First of all a crown could fit perfectly on her head! She's got hair AND THAT MEANS A CROWN CAN BE PINNED ON! Denny Mendez had hair LIKE THAT when she won Miss Italy! In FACT I think Zambia's hair style is the BEST because the crown would most likely not fall off! A crown should belong to a women on merit and not hair! It's disgusting and small minded to write a contestant off because they have a different style! Miss Universe is SUPPOSED to represent women of ALL TYPES around the world! Comments demeaning her hair, regardless if they were racist in intent or not, speak to the narrow minded view of beauty people have! There are millions of beautiful hairstyles around the world and even if you don't like them you should RESPECT THEM!

And to "Mr. Rivers" Chelsea is not just doing this solely on Zambia's hair! She and others (like myself) have experienced a PLETHORA of racism! Don't tell her she's "pathetic" because she's offended. That is so f**king rude! Don't tell people how to feel! Excuse yourself, who the hell are you? I would have given you respect if you responded RESPECTFULLY to the comment!

So, I just used Toma's comment as an example. It wasn't the biggest one, but it was posted in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Toma, what you said was wrong. There is a huge connection between black hair and racism. Have you ever heard of "good hair" vs. "bad hair"?
It's a form of racism that started during slavery and still effects American women who are of African descent, as well as black women all over the world. Why? The media has adopted the opinion.

Essentially, bad hair is coarse hair that is considered "nappy" and/or short, while "good hair" is longer with a wavy to straight texture.
Many black women who compete have false hair to fit the part, and when Zambia stepped up and displayed her natural roots, it shocked me that someone would even SAY something like that. Of course the crown would fit her head?! Why shouldn't it? Miss Tanzania '07 had NO hair and wore a crown (and looked stunning doing so).

If you want me to go through the forum and flag all the inappropriate comments of a racist nature that i have encountered on this forum, I will.
And I encourage other people who haven't done so to start. Not just about black women, but about other contestants of different ethnicities.

A lot of members actually appreciate black beauty (I am one of them!!), but you guys don't see it because you concentrate too much on the negative things.

Without black people - the world would be boring as hell. We should have love and respect for each other, because it is such a nice thing to have so many different cultures on earth.

Oh and btw - Toma is such a nice guy and he is DEFINITELY NOT a racist!

SUAVE wrote:Hey sis.

I agree with you. Racism is so NOT cool and we should just ignore it you know? The racist members are brainless so you better stop wasting time discussing things with them. We should concentrate on the positive things.

I never said Toma was racist, I just said his comment was enough to make me say something about what I've seen.
I didn't even use his name in the initial post because I wanted to use an example.

I'm not going to ignore racism. I'm going to report it and I'm encouraging others to as well.

And without black people... No one would be here... And so, yes...It WOULD be boring.

You're right...
Completely. But I'm still going to report people.
I'm not even really upset... I feel bad for putting Toma on blast... But I think it should stop.

FYI QueenChelsea ..

I dont hate/dislike people by skin color, look, height or any other physical attributes, cuz i believe good and beautiful things come in many different ways and forms. when it comes to social life, for me - personality count the most.
