Will 64th Miss Universe hit below 70 contestants since '88?

Postby ajsy0203 » Sat Jun 27, 2015 2:40 am

Disclaimer: This is not a hate post. This is an analysis post at the height of the controversies surrounding Mr. Trump & MUO.

The last time Miss Universe got less than 70 contestants was in the 1988 pageant in Taiwan (which is the pre-Trump & post-Bob Barker era). The lowest number of delegates in the Trump era of the pageant was in 2003 (start of NBC era) in Panama with only 71 contestants competing for the title.

Now with the recent controversies surrounding Mr. Trump about the remarks on Mexico trade and threats of some countries from Latin America to boycott the Miss Universe contest. Will the 64th annual Miss Universe pageant hit below 70 contestants in late 2015-January 2016? Will Miss International finally beat Miss Universe in terms of number of candidates since 1961 (MI only beat Miss Universe twice in terms of number of contestants both in 1960 & 1961)? Will other minor international beauty pageants grab this opportunity to beat Miss Universe in terms of number of candidates?

The Latin countries of Sur and Central America have the numbers. If they galvanize into a solid block, the reduction from the Ms U list for 2015 could alter the figures into a down slide.

Question: Was Donald Trump ill-advised about his anti-Mexican pronouncement, or was the controversial retort taken by some quarters out of context albeit in a spontaneous reaction to a question about Mexican drug peddlers and rapists.

Was media guilty of irresponsible reportage and blowing the issue out of proportion? Maybe it's media's or Mr Trump's rivals' vindictive moment of opportunity to hit back at the man despised by not just a few in all America.

Mr. Trump is surrounded by a formidable team of policy advisers. The paid defenders of the hierarchy should be inching for rapid-fire damage control measures after the damaging statement was published. It seems that that is not happening to this day as we speak.

Can it be a ploy on the part of Trump's drum beaters aimed to reverse the tide of ill will and turn that into an electioneering advantage after Trump's presidential bid was made public.

Mr Trump specifically targeted the illegal undocumented Mexican perpetrators of the wanton acts against all humanity. He did not address his vilification campaign against Latin countries in general.

It is my view that learned readers and respondents use discretion and discernment in isolating issues and not lump their sentiments altogether in an emotional outburst against a man whose success has drawn out the hate and envy by many.

The worst edition of the Miss Universe pageant was in 1988 (held in Taipei, Taiwan) with only 66 entries :(

This is the one of the best commentaries since the fallout of the ongoing controversies surrounding the MUO and the Latin community.

Miss Universe 1987 lost lots of candidates due to the big schedule shift of the pageant from July to May (2 months earlier).
Miss Universe 1988 only got 66 contestants (I think due to some of the countries did not recognize Taiwan)?

There won't be any much difference anyway because it will only be the absence of ONE powerhouse which is Venezuela. There are only THREE powerhouses anyway so U.S.A. and PHILIPPINES will still be there. Not much difference really! =c3 =c3 =c3

I sincerely wish for a lot of countries' withdrawals BUT I know a lot of them are hypocrites and will send a contestant even if they don't agree.

Who cares? The number of contestants depend on hundreds of factors and does not constitute "success" EXCEPT maybe

- the lesser the contestant, the more chances of winning.
