TOKYO — When Ariana Miyamoto was crowned Miss Universe Japan 2015, participants said she stole the show with a saucy strut, an infectious smile and a calm self-confidence that belied her 21 years. But it was not just her beauty and poise that catapulted her to national attention.
Ms. Miyamoto is one of only a tiny handful of “hafu,” or Japanese of mixed race, to win a major beauty pageant in proudly homogeneous Japan. And she is the first half-black woman ever to do so.
Ms. Miyamoto’s victory wins her the right to represent Japan on the global stage at the international Miss Universe pageant expected in January. She said she hopes her appearance — and better yet, a victory — would push more Japanese to accept hafu. However, she said, Japan may have a long way to go.

A Top 15 spot for Japan represented by a hafu is already a big step in today's pageantry especially in a premier pageant like Miss Universe. It might take more than a generation for Japan to crown another hafu like her. The international attention Ariana is receiving is even bigger than what happen to Israel's Titi Ayanaw in 2013. And in my personal opinion, Ariana is much better in terms of everything. Again, Ariana, if you are reading this, many people like you. You should know how to transform yourself physically to be noticed not only on worldwide news but also on the stage as big as the Miss Universe pageant.

Why does Japan have to change? Not every country in the world has to be a melting pot. It works for some (Canada) and it destroys others (Germany) Japan is cool because of the way it is now...very wacky and very Japanese. But I'm not worried because I know Japan wont budge anyways.
And yes her hair is a mess. I was under the impression that she had long silky hair...
Being mixed race doesn't equal being multicultural. Ariana is 100% Japanese culture-wise. You are missing the point. Multiculturalism is a totally different issue. Ariana is not an immigrant bringing a foreign culture with her, but a person born to Japanese mother raised within Japanese culture and perceiving herself as a Japanese, dealing with rejection only because of the way she looks. If you think of purity or "destroying a country" (sic!) in the genetic terms only you are just a racist. BTW, since when Germany is destroyed? That's literally the strongest economy in the EU.
