Smile's TOP 15 Miss Universe: A Rolling Thread | OCT 28

Postby Smile » Fri Aug 10, 2018 11:24 pm

Typically, I don't make lists before all the contestants are crowned or before the arrivals but I thought it'd be fun to create a list and follow its evolution as it gets closer and closer to Departures & Arrivals. I'm not sure I see Vietnam winning as of yet, I see her placing 100% though, you have some interesting choices but I like it! Out of curiosity, what made you put Vietnam as your winner?

At this stage, all of the women are beautiful but I always look for the contestants who exemplify an authentic beauty rather than a rehearsed or forced beauty. I feel like that's what Demi and Iris did so well.

We know that most of the contestants will be trained and try to manufacture that kind of authenticity and will probably go far but what I like about the IMG judges is they have the ability to weed out the fakers.

I feel like Vietnam exemplifies that authentic beauty, from head to toe, and she will stand out on that big stage on finals night, in the way Demi and Iris did. There are other factors of course such as host city, sex appeal, global appeal, etc.

Great minds... :=p

I like Malta too but I think people are sleeping on China. I suspect when they see more of her, they'll change their minds as well.

Glad to see Vietnam on top of your list.

She is definitely a crown contender together with Tamaryn, Cat, Limongi, Venezuela, Summers.

It was her choice, we may not agree with who she think will win Miss Universe, let us just respect her and be mindful. At the end of the day, authenticity comes from within and no one can say if you are faking it. All of them are faking it, its just that someone are good in hiding it.

I’m surprised when Vietnam came out of nowhere on top of your list. As far as I observe, you have never expressed that she is a strong contender. Nice list anyway :)>-

I don't agree with some of the positions, but overall I like your choices because they're objective choices.

I have a feeling this is one of those years where you can point out who's the clear front runner from the get go.

My current Top 5 is as follows:

1. SOUTH AFRICA
2. PHILIPPINES
3. ECUADOR
4. EL SALVADOR
5. USA

The video posted by a Vietnamese fan on another thread illustrates her realness. How she flicked her fingers while walking, how she carreid a rather ghastly gown (the zipper at the back--oy!), how she regrouped with the rest of the Miss Vietnam court with casualness--her presentation is simply endearing and, to use Smile's word, authentic. She's easily my favorite Vietnam girl ever, and I'm now seeing that she's everyone else's as well.

Smile, good list BTW. I agree with your Top Five. They seem to be the ladies you want to hang out with (with your mouth agape in awe)!

With subjectivity, perhaps. This is one variable that you just have to use your gut feeling for.

Right!
Fake genders! Fake beauties should be weed out first!
Miss Universe is now a battle between manmade and God-made women.
I can see who are the ‘manmade faces’ in that list.
Premise fallacy!

Yeah, it was a tough decision but I felt Malta needed to make my list plus the additions of Canada, Korea, and Jamaica. Some think this year's batch is weak but I disagree. A lot of quality women will clap this year.

But I like Japan so she made my TOP 20 with a chance to rise.

I think you can tell when they perform on stage. Iris is the perfect example of that authenticity. The way she effortlessly carried herself on stage to the way she answered her Q&A with real life experiences and not politically rehearsed. Her final look performance is one of the most beautiful and natural I’ve ever seen. Haiti & Colombia were not in her league at all. They looked stiff, nervous, and rehearsed. Iris wasn’t even the most facially beautiful that night, but her authenticity makes you fall in love with her. I can see why OP has Vietnam as his number 1. Like Iris, Vietnam is not the most facially beautiful, but she has the stage presence and authenticity to showcase. As much as I love Cat, I’ve always maintained that she has a bit of issue with authenticity. Perhaps she is authentic, but she doesn’t convey that very well and it tends to come across as rehearsed. To me, she calculates every move too perfectly. I wish she’d losen up a bit. I feel like that may have been the reason why she lost the Miss World crown.

I think you can tell when they perform on stage. Iris is the perfect example of that authenticity. Cat was packaged as another Megan. She also rather evoked a "please-take-me-seriously" effect, particularly during interviews where she barely smiled through her replies, which were also a bit too lengthy. It didn't help that Miss World 2016 had an unshakeable aura of being preconceived, premeditated, and prearranged.

She's much, much more relaxed now, as you can see even from the lower but still sprightly tone of her voice. It's a big step in the right direction.

China has been very low key. What is your observation about her?

Funny how the TS picks on IMG’s penchant on back-stories that people already forgot what is truly beautiful from what is not...and yet puts on Vietnam on top just because she looks different from the regular Vietnamese girls in pageants. But in reality, the girl is below average beauty =;)) =;)) =;))
