I believe it is all about preparation. i have been to the Philippines and they take the contest very seriously. it may be the biggest deal in their country. Believe me, the contestants do gain confidence knowing that the entire country is behind them. Sadly, we Jamaicans can be extremely critical while the pinoys have this blind faith and unwavering support for their delegates. So I hope that Uzuri is encouraged and applauded for their great work but now they need to build on this and try to give their contestants the adequate training that they need to compete with these powerhouses. Yendi did a lot of the leg work on her own but not everyone is as resourceful. She admitted that she watched countless youtube videos of past contests and studied responses and stage presence. She also got her body in tip top shape looking more svelte than her stint at Miss World. I wish Uzuri all the best in their continued quest to bring home the elusive Miss Universe crown.
Jamaicans usually need some amount hype before they give someone attention. That or if the girl is likeable and clearly above the rest (Kaci, Yendi and Davina, and Emily to an extent) and/or if they make a statement (Davina). But outside of public support, its very clear how serious some of these countries are about it by the way the girls are promoted and hyped to the public. And the updates on training and the level of work and detail that goes into making sure their styling is on point from early on versus trying to cram in last minute ideas closer to the date of the international competition. And the different ways they try to involve the public.
Its like having a product and selling it. Uzuri needs a little more work in selling.
And good point about Yendi. Every now and again I wonder if that has ever been part of the training process. I can understand that finding the money and resources are likely an issue but that's why the smaller things like these can be useful. Even though the resources are minimal are we fully utilizing all of them? I'm not so sure
We agree with both of you.
BTW, Yendi is still the standard that everybody is striving for. Any Jamaican that wants to win Miss Universe should be studying her tapes.
But we really think Jamaica will win Miss Universe in the near future. It took Philippines several years of back-to back placements to get these two most recent crowns. And Colombia had many placements and first runner ups before Paulina Vega won in Kaci’s year.
Uzuri just needs to keep on picking great candidates and learn from past mistakes.
