NBC NETWORK DROPS MISS USA & UNIVERSE PAGEANTS?

NEW YORK CITY, February 17 - NBCUniversal has dropped the Miss USA/Universe pageants from the NBC television network line-up, forcing the famous beauty events to move to other television stations within the broadcasting giant.

NBC network, which had carried the annual telecast of both contests since 2003 with a series of three-year contracts, notified Miss Universe Organization officials that they will not pick up the option this year.

NBC network has been struggling to find a decent place among ratings. What was the #1 network in the country during the nineties, fell to an unappealing fourth place during the past years. A change in the directorship of programming also caused the pageants, and other staple shows for the network, to face an uncertain future.

But it is not the end, at least not for now. The pageants -a joint venture with billionaire Donald Trump- will stay inside the empire. The annual Miss USA competition, to be held in June, has been picked up by NBC-owned network Bravo, as confirmed by Andy Cohen, who serves as Executive Vice President of Original Programming and Development, Bravo Media.

Bravo has been an NBCUniversal cable network since December 2002 and was the first television service dedicated to film and the performing arts when it launched in December 1980. For more information visit bravotv.com.

The Miss Universe pageant also has a new house: Spanish-language broadcast network Telemundo, which leads the industry in the production and distribution of high-quality Spanish-language content across its multiplatform portfolio to U.S. Hispanics and audiences around the world. "This is an amazing opportunity for the network, as producer of a high-end international show and owner to distribution rights" said Joshua Mintz, Executive Vice President of Telemundo.

Telemundo reaches 94% of U.S. NBC Universal officials didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.

NBCUniversal is one of the world’s leading media and entertainment companies in the development, production, and marketing of entertainment, news, and information to a global audience. NBCUniversal owns and operates a valuable portfolio of news and entertainment television networks, a premier motion picture company, significant television production operations, a leading television stations group, and world-renowned theme parks. Comcast Corporation owns a controlling 51% interest in NBCUniversal, with GE holding a 49% stake.

I think Telemundo was the only network that actually wanted the pageant and was willing to pay all the money.

Why wouldn't they pick it up?
Alot of the USA state pageant winners and even winners always visit Fox for interviews.
It's one of the most "American" channels, sticking with "wholesome American values."
Plus what's more American than Football and Beauty Pageants?
Perfect combo.

because of how conservative they are. Fox has shown
their frustration at the pageants especially Miss USA.
Trump may be republican, but hes not well liked by Fox.
If Fox were to pick up, expect the pageant to turn a 360 turn
like 33484 times

Thats what u get for choosing the most boring and the biggest plain Jane winner in 2011.....the ratings were at a lowest in years since 1999 and sponsors dropped and lost interest .....beauty pageants and political correctness should not go together because they don't blend well....Leila lopes was ,is and the wrong choice....too late

SERIOUSLY? I HOPE CBS GETS IT BACK, IF NOT HOPE ABC WILL BE INTERESTED SINCE THEY STAGED MISS AMERICA WHICH HAS BIG AND NICE STAGE! IF TELEMUNDO GETS IT THEN, LATINA WILL RULE MISS UNIVERSE, AND IT SHOULD BE RENAMED MISS LATINA UNIVERSE!( JUST KIDDING) :)>-

I read this in a latin forum, and since it was in english, they must have found it somewhere else, where I found it nobody speaks english. Could be from a Telemundo source, since it's running through the latin forums, but yeah, it could be false, who knows.

All posters of such "information" must provide a valid link to the original source, otherwise this is a hoax... >:)

It was only a matter of time before it happened...

But from now on, I expect Latinas to win every single year.

I don't think it has anything to do with Leila winning, Lina. After all, the winner is not known till the last moments of the pageant, so technically, the # of people watching it would have been the same regardless of whether Leila or the Brazilian girl or Olesya or Shamcey ended up with the crown. Now, if people disapproved of Leila then it may affect this year's ratings...
No, I would chalk it down to MUO's extremely boring and predictable format, and complete lack of promotion.
