Miss World America

Postby wanderlustwoman » Wed Aug 01, 2018 9:52 pm

America's Miss World/Miss World America is under new leadership for 2018. Entertainment producer Michael Blakley and TV host & former Miss Great Britain Liz Fuller, both of Electra Star Management, are now in charge.

Applications for the 2018 edition went live this week, but many prospective delegates were left confused with the lack of info. Originally the pageant was to be held Sept 22-23 in Los Angeles, but there were no details regarding what the phases of competition would be. Michael and Liz have now scrapped the production and will appoint a titleholder to send to China, with plans hold a national pageant in 2019.

The door is wide open for another national system to become the #2 pageant in the US now that the Miss America Organization is in chaos. Miss Earth US is definitely on the rise, but the US has yet to take home the crown. US delegates have been successful at Miss World, most recently with Alexandria Mills winning it all in 2010, and 5 additional placements since.

Thoughts on the new leadership and future of Miss World in the USA?

It’s fine if they will handpick the 2018 representative. Hopefully they will come back strongly in 2019 :)>-

How come MAO is in chaos? Is it because the new format that they will observe in the upcoming finals is such a total mess or do you actually have info on any resistance from state directors?

I was actually saddened with what happened to Miss World America. After the Safrit (2014 2nd princess?) mother & daughter tandem took over, I though they were gonna flourish.

From what I know, from a casting Agency, MW US transferred to Miss United States Org. in 2014. Megan was even in Washington DC to formalize the new partnership. I know this because I intensely followed her reign. But the year after, they established Miss World Amercia. Don’t know if same people were handling it but there were allegations of corruption, right? That’s why the Safrit’s took over.

I love Clarissa, last year’s winner but when I found out that the system was no longer represented per state (which is very fundamental in any organized US pageant) I kindah got worried. I thought it might mean something. And now this.

What could have happened. I was following them on IG and there even was a countdown as to when registrations open (since they no longer have state directors). Then when D-day came for the announcement, they released this press statement. There were aspirants who were commenting if they will still require 1,000 USD registration since the selection will just be online. I just hope no one was scammed. That wouldn’t be good.

But silver lining is that they will be stationed in Los Angeles. Too many pageants happening in DC so this is refreshing. Even ME US is moving to Las Vegas next year.

It's in chaos because the new leadership hasn't been transparent or communicated effectively with the state and local directors about the changes and new direction of the organization. Gretchen just made the changes with no plan/timeline of how 2.0 will look at the state and local level. 22 states signed a petition stating that they want the new Board of Trustees and President/CEO out for these reasons. There's also concerns about funding, more specifically if there are any new sponsors and enough cash in the scholarship fund. People are also upset that the current titleholder isn't being treat well by the new leadership. One big red flag is that Cara Mund no longer has control over the MAO Instagram account and the lack of appearances outside of her home state.

This article gives a good summary about what's been going on: https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/a-civil-war-is-breaking-out-in-the-miss-america-community/2018/07/10/f26837aa-8481-11e8-9e80-403a221946a7_story.html?noredirect=on&utm_term=.61701741e381

If you have time to kill, browse the Voy Pageant Guru message board and you'll get a better idea of why directors/volunteers/contestants/fans are upset.

The IG post stated that applicants no longer had to pay the $1,000 fee, but now a $250 application fee. It still feels a bit rushed, but I hope they appoint the title to a woman who will attract a lot of contestants for next year.
