Her rather unusual answer made her the third finalist that evening instead of the winner.

Madhu says "All the officials had told us that our answers had to be truthful," she says, "and coming from the heart. Nobody told us we had to be politically correct. I said what my heart told me and I lost. According to me India has been in poverty for many years, so it was not going to suddenly change in one year by my becoming the prime minister. But there are other areas like art and sports in which we can improve. And being a sportsgirl I had suffered because we don't have the equipment and the grounds in India. In the brief time you get to answer I wanted to say all this but perhaps because of my inadequacy in English, I could not express myself." She has also acted in the 2003 film Boom. Sapre lives in Italy with her husband Gian Maria and shuttles between India and Italy. They have a daughter together named Indira.

Do you know that Madhu was elected only 12 days before heading to the Miss Universe 1992 contest? @-) @-) @-)

Her first public appearance was at the Air Force Club Contest at the age of 15. She did a few fashion shows thereafter. Then during 1994 she decided to be a participant in The Miss India beauty pageant, fully aware that she was being pitted against the reigning favorite, Aishwarya Rai. Sushmita took everyone by surprise when she was crowned Miss India while Aishwarya had to be content with being the First Runner-up. Both beauties went on to win Miss Universe and Miss World titles respectively. Ironically the final outfit for Miss Universe for Sushmita was made by a little-known Meena Bazar tailor, and her mom. It was during 1996 that she first appeared as herself in a Bollywood movie titled 'Dastak'. She has since then portrayed herself in a variety of characters and also some 'item' numbers. She wanted to be a mother and to adopt a baby girl, and name her Renee. Since she is single, she had to fight a Court battle before she could finally adopt Renee. Finally on 13 April 2000 she was given the go-ahead to adopt her, even though the family-owned business in Dubai was already re-named as 'Renee' quite ironically a year earlier on 13 April 1999. On 13 Jan, 2010 she adopted a three-month-old girl and named her Alisah.

Lara Dutta is an Indian actress, model and beauty queen who was crowned Miss Universe 2000 and Miss Intercontinental 1997. She was the second woman from India to be crowned Miss Universe. Dutta won the annual Gladrags Megamodel India competition in her native India in 1995, thus winning the right to enter the 1997 Miss Intercontinental Pageant, in which she took first place. Later, she was crowned Femina Miss India Universe in 2000. At Miss Universe 2000 in Cyprus, she achieved the highest score in the swimsuit competition and her finalist interview score was the highest individual score in any category in the history of the Miss Universe contest, as her interview saw a majority of the judges giving her the maximum 9.99 mark. After her final question, in which she delivered a defense of the Miss Universe contest (and other beauty pageants), she became the second Indian Miss Universe. Dutta's win led to her appointment as a UNFPA Goodwill Ambassador in 2001. In the same year, Priyanka Chopra and Dia Mirza won their respective Miss World and Miss Asia Pacific titles which gave India a rare triple victory in the world of beauty pageants. She signed up for the Tamil film, Arasatchi in 2002, but due to financial problems, it was only released in mid-2004. She made her Hindi debut in 2003 with the film Andaaz which was a box office success and won her a Filmfare Best Female Debut Award. She then went onto appearing in Bardaasht, which failed to do well at the box office. Her next release Aan: Men at Work was also a flop in India. Insan, Elaan and Jurm also ended up failing to do well at the box office. She later appeared in Masti.

Kudos for collecting all the pictures and information!!! :7 Amazing!
Btw - I still feel that India was robbed in 1992. It was in fact my first Miss Universe I have ever watched and Madhu was my winner from the beginning. I still think that was the final answer which costed her the Miss Universe crown.
Earthquakes don't recognize borders. Diseases, famine, drought don't recognize borders. Why the f* should we?

Re: INDIAN BEAUTY IN MISS UNIVERSE CONTEST 1951 - 2015

Postby Jikeman Bukle » Mon Dec 14, 2015 2:41 pm

India's best decade was the 1990s. Women like Sushmita Sen, Sandhya Chib, Madhu Sapre, Namrata Shirodkar, Nafisa Joseph, Gul Panag, Lymarina De Souza and Susan Sabrok have been among the best India has chosen. Even Munpreet Brar was good, even though I'm not her biggest fan.

Lara Dutta was amazing. Neha Dupia and Celina Jaitley were competitive as well.

After that year, I haven't been India's best fan. 2004, 2012, 2013, and 2014's placements haven't been my favorites, especially the first two. Puja Gupta was good but didn't know how to take it to the next level. I liked Neha Kapur a lot.

Re: INDIAN BEAUTY IN MISS UNIVERSE CONTEST 1951 - 2015

Postby pineal » Tue Dec 15, 2015 10:37 am

I didn't know, we had such wonderful amazing winners before i was born.
=c3 =c3 =c3 Thanks a lot for this thread
Some of the girl's beauty looks so much ahead of their times, only if Miss India Org. had trained them well for swimsuit portion, we could've had more crowns.
Nonetheless, I am bedazzled by the amount of success the retro era queens have achieved in their lives, it is truly an era to be proud of
Is it just me or Pia looks kind of like Suzanne Sublok

Happy Diwali To one and all! May this diwali light up lives from the darkness. We at home celebrate it by lighting lamps and drawing different kinds of rangoli designs in front of our home and welcome Goddess Lakshmi. Bursting crackers is one of the best enjoyment we achieve on the festival of Diwali.
