I think the problem here was the Miss America Org not swimsuits. They repeatedly claimed that Miss America is a scholarship program and that they rewarded virtues not looks, the mockery was inevitable, more so when John Oliver uncovered all the money they didn't give in form of scholarships. Miss Supranational is a great example, they promote the pageant as what it really is - a celebration of natural beauty, grace and fashion.
It is about committing to what you are creating, but for that you've to believe in your product. They tried to defend the swimsuit competition with melodramatic stories of it's contestants which is a huge trend in reality shows, but the results are in and they failed.
