Pageant Organizers as judges, Good Idea or Bad Idea?

Postby ajsy0203 » Wed May 30, 2018 2:11 pm

Every year you see these names as one of the judges at their respective pageants:
MWO Chairwoman: Julia Morley
MIO/ICA President: Akemi Shimomura
MEO Executive Vice President: Lorraine Schuck
MSO Production Producer: Gerhard Parzutka von Lipiński
MGIO Vice President: Teresa Chaivisut

Now at Miss USA 2018, MUO President Paula Shugart is now one of the members of selection committee/judges at the pageant.

In your opinion, do you think the pageant organizers should sit or not to sit as one of the judges at the pageant? What are the pros and cons about this idea?

Good Idea. Organizers and the winners will be working together for a whole year and of course the Organizer have all the right to be part on selecting the woman who will represent their brand and advocacy but also will be a great person to work with.

I didn't understand at first until working with Julia Morley and the MWO for several years as a National Director. The organization manages, supports, works and ultimately lives with the winner for the full year. It's a "Job Interview" not popularity contest. All organizers should be a part of the selection process not making the "Sole" decision, but definitely have a voice. That should happen at the National levels also, but we know there will be abuse of power in some instances!

I’ve got no issue with the pageant organizer helping determine the winner. After all it’s his/her pageant. But only to a certain extent. I prefer to see the organizer as part of the judging panel where he/she is only one of several voices. I don’t want him/her to be the ultimate judge...to prevent blatant favoritism and to avoid injecting too much politics into the decision making process.

Plus, I want to see the judges inputting their scores in a computer independent of one another to ensure maximum fairness. And having a reputable auditing firm take charge of the scores prevents manipulation of the outcome to suit the organizer’s wish.

its a good idea that the "one" of the organizers should sit as one of the judges but there must be a limitation and still provide transparency, not to the point that you will deciding who will be the winner and the rest of the judges will just be a "front"

Good idea. The Morleys in the judging panel as Miss World actually produced great results especially in the past............until national directors were added to the judging panel which personally I believe is a huge NO. Regardless of which country the ND came from (Indonesia, Philippines, etc), having them on the judge's table is a huge NO.

Another question, how about a REIGNING titleholder as part of the judging panel? I think Miss International does it. I'm quite in fence with this because it gives me a thinking that their national successors clapped just because of them. I don't know. I can be wrong.

No, I think the Miss Supra winner gets to judge on Mister Supranational the next day after she was crowned. I'm not so sure. But in Miss International, it was very evident. I don't want to think about it, maybe because it's becoming their 'protocol' not to let the reigning country place in the next pageant.

Fairly my ass!!! Miss World has always been questionable when it comes to the selection of winner. It's just that people saw the travesty in 2016 to finally voice out their disappointment.

Though I will say that they get the winners right most of the time.

I think the pageant owners and executives are the only people who have the right to sit as one of the pageant judges, but not as the head of the judging panel.

National Directors SHOULD NEVER SIT AS ONE OF THE JUDGES AT ALL BECAUSE OF OBVIOUS BIAS. Their loyalty will always be with their country no matter how people say it.

Pageant owners and executives, on the other hand, own the brand. They should have a say in the selection of the person who will represent them for the following year.

So for me, having Julia, Lorraine, Paula, Akemi and the others is OK provided that they do not sit as the head of the judging panel.

That is OK, since the Supra org explicitly mentioned it in their rules. Besides, I think having the reigning winners as one of the sitting judges is justifiable with the fact that they should have a say with regards to the person who will succeed them.

Good Idea for as long as it is the actual owner. Bad Idea if particular NDs are involved

Paula Shugart’s participation at Miss USA was simply the new version of “Trump picks.” So instead of doing it “behind the scenes,” her picks were done during the broadcast and were included in the scoring.
